Overview
Tej Bindu Upanishad with two main themes be,
True Yoga is to focus on one’s Brahman identity,
And since there is no duality in Brahman surely,
All the phenomena are but unreal undoubtedly.
Only the Brahman be, a higher teaching truly,
The world unreal, that is not accepted easily,
But all things subject to decay, destruction be,
So world is insignificant to Absolute Reality.
Invocation
May Brahman protect us both completely!
Bestow upon us fruit of Knowledge wholly!
May we obtain energy to get knowledge truly!
May what we do study reveal the Truth fully!
May we have no ill feeling for others actually!
May we not dispute, hate each other mutually.
OM! PEACE! PEACE! PEACE!
Let peace be in environment and me!
Let peace be in forces acting on me!
Let there be Peace totally completely!
OM!
(I) The Brahman
One should meditate on the Self really,
It, highest practice, difficult to achieve be,
The Self, nature of bliss, main refuge be,
And beyond the mind and speech actually.
The liberated from anger, lust, ego are free,
Not effected by pairs of opposites surely,
Here stated fifteen Yoga practices clearly,
Of Self-knowledge; things to avoided fully.
Who thus attain Brahman, respected be,
But not those who attached to world be,
They offer lip-service about Supreme only,
And do suffer in existence transmigratory.
Brahman is pure consciousness certainly,
The Unseen Cause of this universe simply;
So, one should meditate on being actually,
With belief attain the Self-realization truly.
The highest meditation on Self of all be,
That abiding in the heart, subatomic truly,
It the true provider of joy, peaceful be,
Which transcends gross and subtle fully.
1
That practice is difficult, painful, hard to see,
Liberating, enduring, difficult to achieve truly,
That meditation on one’s own Self does be,
And that the meditation of the sages but be.
2
That is for him who steals not, nor is angry,
Who controls his senses, given up society,
For who free from opposites, is ego free,
And who is free of desire and greed totally.
3
Who but approaches inaccessible clearly,
And he does avoid the conceivable actually,
It is stated that the Self has abodes three,
And the seekers find them in Vedas three.
4
Shed laziness, know supreme secret fully,
Which is without any support assuredly,
It the nature of bliss and subtle does be,
That the highest abode of Parmatma be.
5
It appearing with three faces specifically,
And with three qualities, and three bodies,
It without form, unchanging undoubtedly,
Without distinction or shape, baseless be.
Atma in three states of consciousness be,
Wakefulness, dream, deep sleep clearly,
Purity, passion, dullness its three qualities;
Gross, subtle, and causal its three bodies.
6
One’s nature beyond speech and mind be,
Harmful to illusion of a limited aide surely,
That state understood, comprehended be,
And obtained from the true path of unity.
7
That state is never-ending bliss actually,
Inconceivable, liberated, unchanging truly;
The Self should ever contemplated be,
As everlasting, immovable, infallible, free.
8
That is Brahman – that Supreme Self be,
That is Parmatma, that Highest Refuge be,
That is Self, beyond thought – highest be,
Nature of pure consciousness in actuality.
9
Residing in heart; void and non-void be,
And as well as beyond the void in reality.
Not thought, thinker, nor thought object be,
But what should be contemplated sincerely.
10
The Supreme Void is not all this certainly,
It is not the highest nor the lowest surely,
The Unreal cannot thought of or known be,
But is not beyond the intellect undoubtedly.
11
The sages are one with That actually,
But not the celestial beings certainly;
Where greed, delusion, fear, pride be,
Lust, anger, sin, hunger and thirst be,
Where opposites, thoughts, fancies be,
Arrogance of position - liberated not be.
12- 13
There no fear in emancipation does be,
No pleasure, pain, honor, disgrace be.
That should be known – it Supreme be,
And that is Brahman unquestionably.
14
Restraints, observances, renunciation be,
Silence, place, timeliness, posture clearly;
The root-lock equilibrium of the very body,
And the gaze which is extremely steady.
15
Breath-control and sense-control fully,
Concentration, and absorption totally,
And the Self-contemplation completely;
These the steps of Yoga practice do be.
16
Controlling senses with realization fully,
That Brahman is all but universally,
That is called the true restraint simply,
And should be practiced continually.
17
Observance the highest bliss does be,
Due to the regular practice undoubtedly,
By the wise of oneness ever unfailingly,
And rejection of opposite – the duality.
18
Renunciation from recognizing does be,
That universe, consciousness in nature be,
This the renunciation of honored sages be,
Since it brings immediate liberation surely.
19
Where speech, thought turned back be,
Even without reaching That essentially,
That is the silence attained by the yogis,
And should ever practiced by wise be.
20
How can one describe That specifically,
From which words return unknowingly,
When this phenomenal universe clearly,
Beyond description found even to be?
21
However, that Inherent Silence wholly,
Should be known, understood totally,
So the teachers of the Brahman simply,
Guided unenlightened with speech only.
22
Place is thought that it solitude to be,
Which ever pervading the universe be,
And where there is no one to found be,
In beginning, middle, or the end clearly.
23
The Non-dual and Undivided Bliss surely,
That produces beings, from Brahma truly,
The Creator on down, in blink of an eye be,
Indicated by the word time
undoubtedly.
24
Posture is but ease unquestionably,
In constant meditation of Brahman be,
What is different from that definitely,
Destroys all the happiness completely.
25
Posture for attaining Origin of Beings be,
The Non-dual, Support of Universe truly;
What is called the perfect posture simply,
Where accomplished achieving perfection be.
26
Restraint of the mind, root of worlds be,
That is the root-restraint undoubtedly,
And that is fit for Yoga unquestionably,
Practiced by knowers of Brahman truly.
27
Equanimity of the limbs should known be,
As in Equable Brahman is absorbed truly;
Otherwise, merely straightening the body,
Is very much like as being a dried-up tree.
28
Seeing that world is pervaded clearly,
By Brahman knowledge filled vision be.
That vision is the most noble certainly,
Not just gazing at one’s nose tip surely.
29
Or when vision is directed specifically,
To cessation of seer, seen, seeing fully,
To subject, object, and perception clearly
Not just looking at one’s nose tip surely.
30
Controlling mental fluctuations simply,
And perceiving that the Brahman only,
Exists in all consciousness states truly,
Is said to be real breath control totally.
31
Warding off the very idea completely,
Of a manifold universe exhalation be,
And the thought I am Brahman
truly,
