    Waking up to the sound of drills being marched outside the dorms was something I had grown used to over the past few years, even distant gunfire wasn't an unnatural sound to pierce my lifting dreams, but a helicopter landing virtually outside the door was a new one for me.

    My head rose sharply from the firm pillow, stressing my stiff neck as I twisted sharply to the sound outside the window.

    What the hell, I murmured to myself through a dry mouth.

    I'd had less than a week of my promised fortnight of R&R, most of which I'd spent on base catching up with some old marine buddies before they shipped out to the Middle East.  I was planning on heading home to visit my old neighbourhood tomorrow and see my folks.  I had my Greyhound ticket and a promise from my dad to drop me to a barracks nearer to home to get a military transport back to my unit at the end of the break.

    Rubbing my neck, I swung out from under the thin army issue blanket and stepped over to the window in just my boxers.

    Are you seeing this? I asked, turning to the empty room behind me, then disappointed that I had no one to share the experience with.

    It wasn't everyday a Huey landed in the middle of the parade ground.  Was that even permitted?  I thought not, but then I wouldn't be the one answering to the base Colonel when the complaints came in.

    The lack of acting personnel on site meant that few were around to take notice of the early morning intrusion, or else
