After another year of an unsuccessful Wapiti ballot entry I planned a four-to-five-night trip into the Canterbury high country with my dog, Flint.
The weather forecast was wet for my four hour walk into camp, so my plan was to use the average weather to get there and set up, ready to be into the action the following morning. On arrival I was chilled to the bone and had to set the tent up bloody quick to warm up and wait out the rest of that first day. Thinking the weather had cleared and all had gone quiet I was surprised to unzip my tent the following morning and find it surrounded by a foot of snow – it was only April 2! It
This was the first trip for my new rifle, a Bergara 6.5PRC topped with a VX-5 scope. I went into James Morris'shop with my old beaten up 308 which I had used for 12 plus years, just wanting some advice to spruce it up, and instead left with a brand-new rifle!
As the sudden snow drop melted away over the first two days, action on the tops was fairly quiet and I saw only spikers and young satellite stags roaming around looking for action. The cold weather had also savaged my camera battery life and I had carried in the wrong charging cable.
