This book is dedicated to all the conservation groups working to help the horseshoe crabs recover from the continual onslaught by humans. Many groups are fighting for these wonderful undersea creatures, including Defenders of Wildlife, National Geographic, the Ocean Conservancy, and the National Wildlife Federation, among many others. Thank you for your hard work and d edication!
Dear Friends,
After my first meeting with Alleana, the leader of the Mermaids of Crystal Cay, I have been learning about her pod and its members. One member is Roselia, who visited me recently seeking my help. She was on a dangerous mission, and for her plan to succeed, she would need allies on land, in the air, and under water.
I was glad to assist as Roselia was rescuing horseshoe crabs poached from a local wildlife refuge designated as a haven for creatures both above and below the water. We needed to rescue the crabs; but they had been stolen and were being stored in the hull of the poacher’s boat. Our timing had to be perfect! Would mermaid magic be enough to beat the odds and save these ancient warriors?
Wishing you a magical day!
Michelle

Chapter One
Danger Enters Protected Waters!
Roselia watched as the long procession of horseshoe crabs advanced from the deeper ocean floor toward the shallow water and sandy beaches. Every spring since she could remember, these beautiful creatures joined in a migration to the beaches near Crystal Cay. Alleana, the leader of the mermaid pod of Crystal Cay, asked Roselia to watch over this year’s migration. Roselia was to discover why the numbers of horseshoe crabs had been declining over the past several years, as this decline was affecting the entire e cosystem.
Swimming a little closer, she saw the horseshoe crabs moving in silent unison, the light from the full moon filtering down through the water to guide their way. Their circular dome-shaped shells covered their entire bodies, including their legs, giving them the appearance of gliding effortlessly across the sea floor, what an exquisite sight! She knew their species had survived unchanged for millions of years, and they had been given the title of ancient warriors because of their ability to survive as a species longer than almost any other creature, even the giant ones!
Things look good tonight, Roselia thought, as many horseshoe crabs passed below her heading toward the beach. Maybe this year would be a good year for the horseshoe crabs, and so a better year for all the other creatures who depend on them to survive.
Her thoughts were interrupted as a large shadow crossed overhead, blocking the moonlight for several moments as it moved ahead of her and toward the crabs. Looking up to the surface of the water, she realized a human boat was entering the protected area, an area her friend Michelle told her was off-limits to humans. She learned about humans many years ago and of the dangers they caused to all sea creatures; they were to be avoided at all costs!
This intrusion into this underwater safe space worried Roselia. Although she had been told by Alleana to avoid humans and knew she should leave as soon as they appeared, she just couldn’t leave. She had to see why this human boat was here in protected waters, and she would not leave these sea creatures alone if they needed her help! She rationalized she would still be following Alleana’s directions if she watched from deeper water so she would not be seen—that was the most important rule—don’t be seen!
The boat approached slowly, the rumble noises stopped, and it continued moving, drifting silently toward the shore. Roselia stayed in the deeper water as
