Introduction
I was born and raised in Ukraine. I moved to the United States in March of 2005 to marry my husband, Harvey, who lived in Holland, Michigan.
How did a woman from Ukraine meet and fall in love with a man who lives in a small Midwestern town 8,100 miles away, you ask? Why, the internet, of course!
I wanted to meet and marry an American man, as women in Ukraine believe American men make good husbands. I placed my profile on a few dating sites and after a few-year search I met Harvey on the now-defunct Yahoo Personals. (The moral, ladies: never give up hope!) He flew to Ukraine to meet me; we fell in love and nine months later I came to America and became his wife.
We have been happily married since April 2005. Harvey is not just my beloved husband and the father of our children: he is also my partner in the BeCozi® company. In June 2021 he retired from his job at Hope College in Holland, where he had served for almost 20 years, to become our company's full-time CFO. BeCozi® would never be as successful as it has become without his excellent financial knowledge and expertise.
It was a long journey to get to this point, however. After coming to America and working in a few different jobs, I opened an Adoption consulting business in 2010 to help American families adopt children from Ukraine who were older or had special needs. Ultimately, I helped bring almost 100 children to the U.S., but in the fall of 2015, I had to close my business due to changes in adoption law and a war in Ukraine.
I started looking for another job or business opportunity when I saw an online video of a British woman who was Arm knitting a huge blanket with super chunky Merino wool in the fall of 2015. I had
