Punch Needle Tattoo Designs - Amy Buchanan
Tools & Materials
Punch needle is a relatively straightforward, approachable craft that requires only a few supplies: a punch needle, a few common crafting tools, yarn or thread, fabric, and a hoop or frame. The following sections will explain which tools and materials you should use together to achieve punching success and create your best work.
Meet the Punch Needle
There are lots of different punch needle tools on the market. Most of them do essentially the same thing and only differ as to which yarn weight they work with and which loop size they create. Some are wooden, some are plastic, some are threaded using a channel on the side, and others with a wire needle threader. On some, you can even adjust the needle length to create different loop sizes. They are divided into regular and fine types, with the number representing the length of the needle and in turn the size of the loops.
For the projects in the book you, will need a regular size 10 punch needle for use with chunky and DK yarns and an adjustable fine punch needle for use with thin cotton yarn and embroidery floss. The following (all shown in the photo to the right) are a few of the options you might find available:
•Size 10 wooden punch needle, fine— This needle is for cotton yarn or embroidery floss and creates a fixed ¼" (6.4mm) loop length.
•Plastic adjustable punch needle, regular— This punch needle has four different heights that can be changed with a slide. It is suitable for medium and thicker yarns.
•Size 10 wooden punch needle, regular —This is the needle used in this book for chunky and double knit (DK) yarns. It creates a fixed ¼" (6.4mm) loop length.
•Plastic adjustable punch needle, fine —This is the needle used in this book for thinner yarns and embroidery floss. It comes with three interchangeable needle heads. The height of the loop created can also be adjusted with a twist. I generally set mine to number five.
•Wooden adjustable punch needle, regular —This needle has seven different height settings, allowing you to create pieces with lots of
