EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS
One of the advantages of embroidery is that it requires very little equipment to get started. Here, you’ll find the basic equipment that’s needed for all the embroidery designs in this book. There are a few additional items that will be specified for each design.
•A wooden embroidery hoop. I highly recommend using a hoop or frame to ensure even stitching. I embroidered all the pieces in this book on a hoop with a diameter of at least 6 inches, so I recommend you use the same format. If you have a larger one, that will do just fine, but a smaller hoop won't be sufficient.
•Embroidery thread. I recommend DMC’s special Mouliné
embroidery floss, known for its quality and wide variety of colors. You’ll find the reference numbers under each of the designs, but feel free to use whichever you like. I’ve also included #5 pearl cotton thread in some of the designs to add depth. Please note, you will never need more than one skein of each color listed.
•Embroidery needles. For most of the designs in this book, you can use a #7 needle, which works very well with DMC’s special Mouliné
threads. For some designs, you will also need a #5 needle to use with DMC's #5 pearl cotton. Stock up on an assortment of different-sized needles, so you can use the needle you’re most comfortable with.
•A standard pair of scissors will do, but small precision scissors will make your job easier, particularly for cutting the thread.
•A piece of fabric of about 8 x 8
in cotton, linen, or any other material that you like. I would simply advise that you avoid elastic fabrics, especially if you’re a
