TRIST NAMES INDEX
This list contains most of the people surnamed Trist encountered in researching this family history.
In the index the Trist family name is omitted to save space but was generally Trist(e) or Tryst(e) which is usually the spelling of the record sources used. Sometimes the record source gave the name Trust(e) and if so I have retained this spelling and typed it after the Christian name. In many cases the Trust entries reflected the Devon pronunciation of Trist and there is often evidence that the surname was misspelt (e.g. in Chart 5/574, at the baptism of Ambrose Trust whose father is known to have been Ambrose Trist). He was orphaned and later migrated to New Zealand where his descendants continue to use the surname Trust. Sometimes in earlier documents both spellings are used interchangeably in the same document. However, where a source used Trust I have retained that spelling because in a minority of cases (particularly in the nineteenth century) it passed into use as the surname Trust.
In the index below the abbreviation UFG refers to the details of Unresearched Family Groups which are found in Chapter 2 in this volume. Thus for example the abbreviation UFG, SB, 1700 refers to John Trist and his wife Margaret (nee Turner) whose children were born at South Brent between 1704 and 1711.
The abbreviation Ch. refers to a Chart. Thus for example the abbreviation Ch.1/5 refers to Chart 1 No 5 which is the entry for the biography of Thomas Trist of Cornworthy and his family.
A person without a chart or UFG reference might be entered more than once in the index. For example, if I have not been able to establish that a Thomas Trist baptised at Totnes in 1700 is the same person as the Thomas buried at Totnes in 1750, I have left both entries in the index. It is theoretically possible for such a person to have four, or more, separate entries (own baptism, own marriage, baptism or burial of children, and own burial).
The cut-off year for inclusion in this index is generally 1850 except for those with Devon roots who settled in the New World. For North America, Australia and New Zealand the cut-off year is about 1920, except for major contributors [e.g. Richard Trist of Southsea, U.K. (Chart 1D/1029), Helen Mulich of Galena, Wisconsin, U.S.A. (Chart 8/819), Sally Dimond of Minnesota, U.S.A. (Chart 8A/875) and Heather J. (Joan) Brown of Sydney, Australia, (Chart 6/674)].
Those people born after the cut-off dates are sometimes listed but there is usually a referral to earlier generations (parents or grandparents).
Alphabetical order depends on the first Christian name only and thereafter in order of date of birth or estimated date of birth.
Many dates of birth have had to be estimated and the estimate followed a rough formula depending on the category of the adult record: twenty-four years before a bridegroom reference; twenty-two years before a bride reference; twenty-four years before a first-time mother reference and twenty-six years before a first-time father reference.
