About this ebook
My Family consisting of Pearl Harbor survivors – Chi Chi Jima – Navy Life
Jeanie Frost
My desire to know more about my parents’ lineage began when I was a teenager. I never pursued my interest until my adult age. I would ask my Grandma Pat about her family and the Frost Family and where she came from many times and remember that she also gave me different answers. She told me that she had a twin sister and a brother who died in World War I. She also mentioned that she was born in Dublin, Ireland. I was naïve about her creditability. When I received “The Frost Family” book from my Great Aunt Elsie Frost is when I discovered that my Grandmother was known as Della and not Patricia. The latter part of 2001 I went to Denver, Colorado to see the professional San Diego Gulls Ice Hockey Game and was able search my Grandparents marriage license. It wasn’t until then that my Grandparents did not get married until after the birth of my father and Uncle Clinton! Grandfather Walter Frost was married first to Dora L. Clark 1906. I was not able to get a copy of Uncle Clinton’s birth certificate because I did not provide the correct name of the mother and the birth date I was provided was incorrect!? Mysteries continue to lurk in the closets? My mother’s family Kanoho Kawai from the Hawaiian Islands presented an even bigger challenge as many of the records were recorded in chants and not recorded on paper until long after the missionaries arrived. My mother, older brother and myself are Pearl Harbor Survivors. My mahalo goes out to my second cousin Margaret E. Frost and Luella Frost Heston, who have helped provide information and taking me to the many cemeteries and family homesteads. Without her help none of this would be possible.

FORCED EMIGRATION:TRANSPORTATION TO AMERICAN AND
AUSTRALIA
The practice of transporting convicts, who would otherwise have been executed, dates back to at least 1597. By 1660 transportation was an accepted form of punishment following a royal pardon. An Act of 1718 established transportation to English colonies in America as the standard sentence for many less serious offences. One of the most common crimes for which people were transported was the theft of a handkerchief. Transportation to America ceased in 1775. Prison hulks were used for male prisoners between 1784 and 1791 and records of these can be found at the Public Record Office [PRO]. After 1787 convicts were sent to Australia. Transportation to Australia ended in 1868.
Transportation was for a period of years, usually seven or fourteen years or for life. After convictions, felons remained in prison until their transportation. Convicts to be transported were handed over to agents who could dispose of their services to local land owners. Ship masters certified receipt of the convicts and obtained landing certificates on arrival in America from the governor or chief customs house officer. These landing certificates were returned to the courts as evidence that the sentence had been carried out. By 1718 most convicts were taken to Maryland or Virginia and this continued until 1775. The cost of transportation was borne by the state. Contractors were appointed to provide ships and transportees’ services were sold on arrival. The contractor gave a bond to guarantee transportation would take place and the convict would not return until the end of his or her sentence.

London Sessions Records
Before the establishment of the Central Criminal Court in 1834, the Sessions House in the Old Bailey and the adjacent Newgate Goal were used by both the City of London and the County of Middlesex to try and imprison criminals from the city and the county. However, the office court records of these trials have always been kept separately. Records relating to the City of London cases are among the official archives in CLRO, but similar course records for Middlesex cases can be found at the London Metropolitan Archives [formerly the Greater London Record Office]. London Metropolitan Archives have produced a free information leaflet (no 4) entitled Convicts Transported from Middlesex

Dear Ms Frost
JOHN FROST
Thank you for your letter received at this office on 25 April 1997.
The entry for John Frost appears in English Convicts in Colonial America, Vols I and II. P Coldham (Polyanthus, 1974). The entry is as follows; FROST, John Sentenced to transportation at Sessions of Gaol Delivery on, or immediately before. the date shown) Apr T Oct 1719 Susannah & Sarah LC Annapolis Apr 1720
. Frost was therefore transported to America following his conviction and did not travel to the United States as an indentured servant. The crimes for which people were transported were often of an extremely minor nature.
Volume.: I of Coldham ‘s book relates to cases tried at Middlesex and volume II to London cases. I have, therefore, looked at the Index to Indictments. 1714- 1755 for London cases. Unfortunately, l was unable to find an entry for John Frost. I also looked at Sessions Minute Books for the year 1718-1719 again could not fine entries for John Frost
It would appear that John Frost was, in fact, a Middlesex case and that Coldhan1 has included him in volume II in error. I would suggest that you contact the London Metropolitan Archives who hold the records of Middlesex cases to see if they can trace him on your behalf and I enclose a leaflet giving details of their service.
We do hold a landing certificate for John Frost at this office but, as you a l ready have a copy of this I am afraid l, give no other information regarding him [CLRO Ref; Mise Mss 57.7].to help people researching Middlesex convictions.
