My father ... Me, and Sister Josefina
Introduction
Dear Reader,
The five stories you are about to read in my book titled, Born Blind: Traumas and Triumphs, represent critical parts of my life, feelings, observations, and analyses that marinated inside me long before they reached the written page. Although only one- My father ... Me, and sister Josefina - is non-fiction, the others reflect reality, based on my experiences and those of people I know.
I have been visually challenged since birth, struggling through a lifetime of limitations marked by schoolmates who mocked me and teachers who lacked empathy. Most important, my blindness caused my father to feel disappointed, angry and out of his depth.
I hope that what I’ve written will help you understand what life is like for people like me for whom every day is one with significant challenges. I want each story to hit a nerve, to make you think and maybe impact the way you treat others and live your life.
Let me give you more insight into My Father, Me, and Sister Josefina,
in which I want to convey that despite the disturbing relationship I had with my father, one that irreparably damaged me, I was able to shine a light into his psyche and come to understand his vulnerabilities.
On a trip to the Philippines with him, he told me he did not know how to be a good father to me and that my partial blindness was difficult for him to handle. That admission was one of the best moments I’ve had with him as my father. It was one of the few times I ever heard him list his shortcomings. That’s what made it a special moment for me.
My story, You Can’t Do Nothing,
is dedicated to my friend, John Sutton (1960-2021). John and I met when we were students at Philadelphia’s Overbrook School for the Blind in 1969. But we didn’t get to know each other well, and after my transfer out of the school in 1970, we had no contact for 19 years.
We met again when he and I travelled from Philadelphia with the PA Association of Blind
