Bitten By Choices - Michael Lycett

The music and revelry of Bourbon Street increased dramatically as night fell and the scene started to look more like what Paul had expected from the old Girls Gone Wild DVDs that he had found in his uncle’s basement. He knew going in that the tapes offered an enhanced picture of what was possible, but thankfully more breasts were making appearances the darker it got. Paul danced haphazardly around with his hands full of beer and his backpack full of beads to offer any would be flashers. His friends Roy and Wayne had chided him about expecting too much and for attending the Mardi Gras festivities expecting to lose his virginity, but the 22 year-old was optimistic.
Wayne and Roy had hung back throughout the day and watched as the usually stoic Paul downed beer after beer. It was clear to them that they would be more like babysitters than compatriots in this endeavor. As soon as they had departed the plane, Paul’s behavior had undergone a huge shift from his normal studious, no-nonsense self into an uproarious frat boy, or at least the version of that that he could muster. They knew things were going to get bad after finding themselves apologizing to the flight attendant after Paul offered her a couple strands of beads and a kiss upon landing.
Paul, for his part, was simply looking to enjoy everything he could in this week of freedom. Once the party in New Orleans was done, he would be headed back to Stanford for the final few weeks of classes and then on to the real world where he would never have the chance to party again. His whole life to this point had been partiless, his parents had never thrown him a birthday party or allowed him to attend parties for his limited group of friends. They shunned their peers in favor of keeping their own company and forced their shut-in life upon their only child.
In elementary school, Paul had yearned to make friends outside of the classroom, but was only really permitted to socialize during recess and the dream of friendship had remained quashed through high school. Once he had made it to college, his dreams of being with other people and expanding himself were finally granted life and he became friends with his roommate Wayne, and then with Wayne’s boyfriend Roy. The trio then spent the next three and three-quarters years unsuccessfully trying to get Paul laid. It seemed that the only way Paul would learn what a woman’s touch was like would be to pay
