Introduction
In the pivotal years of my seventh grade, a chapter closed in the tale of my great-grandfather, affectionately known as Big Grandpa.
Though he primarily resided in the heartland of Oklahoma, his journeys frequently included the landscapes of Washington State. These visits afforded me glimpses into the mysterious intrigues of his life, revealing a man whose captivating stories and unconventional choices left an indelible mark on our family.
Big Grandpa departed from this world leaving behind a legacy rich in both mystery and nostalgia. His choice to hire a driver during his travels held roots in a tragic incident that cast a profound shadow over his past—the untimely demise of his first wife. This poignant event, etched into the fabric of his existence, became a silent companion in his later journeys.
A masterful storyteller, Big Grandpa wove narratives that captivated our imaginations, endearingly labeled as whoppers
within the family. While we cherished these tales, we learned, with a touch of affection, not to place undue weight on the promises he made. His charismatic storytelling painted a portrait of a man whose life had unfolded with the unpredictability of a well-spun yarn.
Family legend, like a canvas painted with strokes of intrigue, portrayed Big Grandpa as an orphan, raised by the outlawed fringes of society, and a daring participant in a train robbery. Whispers of a double life, with two families—one in the familiar landscapes of Oklahoma and another in the distant realm of Texas—added an extra layer of mystery to his already unknowable persona.
This narrative embarks on an odyssey into the realm of imagination, drawing inspiration from the captivating life of James Wesley Tiwater. In the spirit of his own whoppers, Big Grandpa once declared, Some things need to go to the grave with me.
With this proclamation, he beckons us to explore the uncharted
