Author

Shelly Ferguson

Shelly Ferguson is best described as a horrible housewife, an awesome mother, an introverted nerd and a hopeless romantic. She lives in the South with her loving hubby, a mermaid for a daughter, two hell hounds, and two miniature divine beings. (Cats – they are cats.) She loves to write stories where the women save themselves, find the man of their dreams, and have a little fun along the way.

    Ada - Shelly Ferguson

    Chapter 1

Iblew a raspberry when tugging on the neckline of my dress had zero effect on the amount of cleavage on display. It was the perfect dress for the Samhain Ball an hour ago. The perfect color, the perfect length, the perfect silhouette. Perfect.

That was before a creep stood behind my chair and tried to take a picture of my boobs.

Ada, honey, it’s a corset. It won’t move no matter how much you pull on it.

I stuck my tongue out at Hannah. I don’t know what I was thinking, wearing this dress in the first place. I feel ridiculous.

I leaned into her when she wrapped her arm around my shoulders.

It’s a gorgeous dress, and you know it. The only reason you don’t feel comfortable is you left your huge sweater at home - thank goodness. Every man here is gonna look at you because you’re beautiful. Hopefully, they won’t try to take a picture of your boobs from above like that idiot. Especially since Lars tossed him across the street into the parking lot.

    Speaking of Lars...

I grinned when Hannah cut me off. She had a thing for the gargoyle since the moment she laid eyes on him. She refused to admit it, but that didn’t stop me from teasing her about it when the opportunity arose.

No one was talking about him. Come on, let’s do a lap around town and bet on who will win the masquerade contest.

I followed her after another useless tug at my corset. I reminded myself to take small steps to keep my shoes hidden under the hem. I wasn’t sure if Gretchen would care that I’d worn my black converse instead of heels, and I didn’t want to find out. There was no way I would be able to make it all night in a pair of high heels. Especially not when you added in the floor length ball gown, the crinoline skirt to make said gown puff out, or my horrible night vision.

I scanned the crowd as we wandered around Moon Gate Field. Somerset’s Town Council usually held a costume party in the square for Samhain every year. This year was different. Natalie Firestorm arranged a Samhain Ball to welcome some elves to the Human Realm. She hired Gretchen to make sure everything was perfect, and Gretchen did not disappoint.

Little café tables and buffets full of food filled the town square. The trees were wrapped with strings of delicate lights. My favorite part was a spell Sophie’s mom cast for the music so you could hear the string quartet in the gazebo from anywhere in town.

Hannah and I took turns pointing out different people we thought could win the costume contest as we strolled through the streets. I pitied the judges. The women took the challenge of a formal masquerade ball and ran with it. Pick any dress style from history and you could find someone wearing it. The men were less creative. Most of them wore simple black suits or tuxes with
