The Jamaican Firearm User's Guide - Roan Morrison
Preface
The Jamaican Firearm User’s Guide was first printed in 2001 with the permission of the Honourable Attorney General. At that time, the licencing and other regulations regarding the use of firearms were under a different entity.
Information on the use of firearm was also minimal at the local level and where it was available, it was closely guarded due to its nature and it was considered to be privileged information.
Since then, the world of information has opened up and all sort of relevant technical information is readily available on the internet as well as in printed media. If a person is intent on obtaining information about the use of firearms or even on how to build a firearm; this is available on the internet.
The Firearm Licensing Authority was established in 2005 by an Act of Parliament. It was established to streamline and standardize the granting, renewal and revocation of firearm licences and all processes relevant to firearm and firearm licences. It has served to modernize and regulate the licensing of firearms as well as facilitating proper training and certification of firearm licence holders. The Firearm Licensing Authority also regulates ranges and other firearm facilities.
My intention for republishing this updated guide arises from the need that I see for prospective firearm holders and current firearm holders to have knowledge available at their fingertips and in a format that is portable and readily understood.
This guide is not meant in any way to replace the manual published by the Firearm Licencing Authority but instead as supplementary information to assist licenced firearm holders.
This guide is divided into six sections as follows;
History and definitions.
Laws governing the use of firearms.
Firearm safety
Getting to know your firearm
Principles of marksmanship.
Shooting Sports
I hope this information will be of immense value to you both on and off the shooting range.
Introduction to Firearms
A firearm is any lethal barreled weapon, from which any shot, bullet or any other missile can be discharged, or any restricted weapon or any prohibited weapon or any part or accessory of such weapon designed to diminish the noise or flash caused by discharging such weapon.
The Handgun
The handgun is a close quarter defensive weapon that can be fired using either a one hand or two hand shooting technique from the standing, kneeling, sitting or prone position. The short overall length of this weapon restricts the distance over which accurate, effective shots can be fired and it is difficult to aim due to its short sight radius; however, this short length facilitates rapid change of aim and it also makes the weapon very dangerous, as it can be easily pointed in the wrong direction.
Types of firearms
Firearm is divided into different types such as revolver, pistol, rifle, shotgun, cannon, machinegun and artillery.
A revolver is a firearm that has a cylinder with a number of chambers. These chambers are designed to be manually loaded with cartridges of the appropriate caliber and then, as the trigger is pulled, the cylinder rotates into position under the hammer and the hammer is released, causing the cartridge to be fired.
Pistols are firearms designed for a more automatic/ semi-automatic operation. Cartridges are loaded into an ammunition magazine which is inserted into the firearm. As long as cartridges are present in the magazine and the firearm is functioning properly, the action of the firearm is responsible for the feeding and chambering of the cartridge and the extraction and ejection of the cartridge case once the cartridge is fired. They can be designed to fire semi-automatically or fully automatic. Semi-automatic operation requires a pull of the trigger to fire each cartridge. Fully automatic operation allows for multiple cartridges to be fired with a single trigger pull for as long as ammunition is available to be fired
A shotgun is a long gun
