    Foreword

Who hasn’t written poetry? And as one grows older, who hasn’t stopped? One of my English professors declared that women couldn’t write poetry after they either married or were over twenty. He didn’t mention men losing that ability, but he was pushing forty, and still writing poetry.

Most of my poetry is from a younger me, but it’s still who I am—mostly. I walk out and am struck speechless by a full moon. Babies fill me with hope and joy, and break my heart if I wonder how their smiles will be changed by a sometimes cruel world. There are poems about animals and laundry, politics, people, and places.

A few of my poems are recent, and I always think I’ll pick up a pen on some given night, and go back to being me.

Some of my poetry has been available on Authors Den.com for years. For free. Some are only available here, because to be honest—most of these were handwritten. And I kept losing them. Thus, I decided to offer them in a collection of selected poems that I hope readers might enjoy.

From poems inspired by my kids, such as First Born, published by McCall’s years ago, to poems about the moon, terrorists, or homecomings, I think you’ll find something that makes you smile, think, or feel.

So, thanks for picking up a copy of Always the Moon or dropping by AuthorsDen.com. Enjoy.

    Dedication

My mother, Nancy Rhodes Potter, was a librarian, and her love of books was a central part of my life. So librarians have a special place in my heart anyway, but colleague and school librarian Mrs. Josefina Bentiez became a special friend—someone with endless stories to tell, endless enthusiasm for life, and endless love—for her family and her friends. Your support, kindness and friendship meant the world to me, Mrs. B.—and I dedicate Always the Moon to you with love. We wish you hadn’t moved on so soon.
