    About the Author

First and foremost, I thank God for His hand on my life and the life of my family. I thank Him daily for the wonderful people He has placed in my life. At the top of that list is the awesome family He has blessed this undeserving man to have. I could never carry out so much in my life without first God’s guidance, inspiration, Spirit, and anointing.

Second, I could never find the motivation to press on without the ongoing support of my wife of thirty-two years, Kristie. It is her continuous support that makes such a difference in my life. I thank our two sons, Michael and Jonathan, for all that they do for us as well as their wives. We are blessed to have two daughters-in-law we can call daughters. Both women, Marla and Toni, are godly women and great wives to their husbands, our sons. As of the time of this writing, Kristie and I have three awesome grandchildren, Aubrielle, Elijah, and Evelia, and what a blessing they are! I want to thank all our family members who have prayed and continue to pray for us in all we do. We love you all!

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed

is the one who takes refuge in Him.

    —Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

    Introduction

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

    —Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word

was with God, and the Word was God.

    —John 1:1 (NIV)

The Word of God is undoubtedly the most valuable tool any Christian can possess. As God’s people walk through the darkness of this present world, we are certain to encounter many obstacles along our path. Some of these obstacles are strategically designed by Satan to cause God’s people to stumble or fall from God’s grace. Other obstacles are placed or allowed by God to build the faith and character of His people. Regardless, God’s Word is His promises, and He promises through any circumstance to never leave us or forsake us.

When we carry the Word of God with us daily, we are carrying the only light that can illuminate not only our path but also that of others as well. It is the illumination from His Word that prevents us from stumbling. John said that since the beginning the Word has existed, and in John 1:14 he said, The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. With God there is no beginning or ending; therefore, the Word has always been with us and will always be with us. The Word is the good news of Jesus Christ. When we enter the Word of God, we are entering into the plan of God for our lives, which is centered in Christ Jesus.

It is my hope and belief that this devotional, Forty Days and Forty Nights with God’s Word, will provide each reader short daily reminders of how God is with them every step of the way. Just as I need His Word to be imprinted in my heart and mind daily, I know you also desire the same. May this devotional be a great blessing to you as well as those with whom you share it.

Why the Number Forty, and How

Does It Apply to My Life?

There are many examples given in God’s Word of people who went through a waiting period before achieving greater victory in their life. What is important to note from scripture is our waiting seasons don’t have to be wasted seasons. It is during our waiting seasons that God can lift us spiritually and prepare us for promotion to the next phase of our lives.

Look for a moment at the life of Moses. Moses was given the task of leading the children of Israel (God’s people) out of Egyptian captivity. Before beginning this massive task, God placed Moses in a waiting season—a season of preparation. Moses spent forty years in the land of Midian serving as a shepherd (Exodus 3:1). It was during this time that Moses was unknowingly undergoing preparation and training for his next phase of life, which was to shepherd God’s chosen flock, the children of Israel.

Later, in Exodus 32, you read that Moses was again in a waiting season, spending forty days and forty nights on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. After returning to the people and finding them involved in idol worship, Moses became angry and had to regroup and go back on the mountain to again hear from God. When Moses returned, the Bible says he had the glow of God upon him.

Many Christians have undergone mountaintop experiences being in the presence of God only to encounter valley experiences causing them to lose their glow. The experience of Moses is a great lesson for Christians today. It is when we get alone with God and separate from the world that we can recover the glow of the Lord in our lives.

Look briefly at the life of Elijah. After the prophet Elijah underwent a mountaintop experience, with God sending down the fire at Mount Carmel, he underwent a valley experience when Jezebel made threats against his life. Elijah ended up on a journey that lasted forty days and forty nights. Elijah’s journey landed him at Mount Horeb (Mount Sinai), the mountain of God. Walking this distance would have been long and arduous, but Elijah was walking toward the peace of God. The Bible says when Elijah arrived, he heard God speak to him in a gentle whisper, a still small voice.

In the Bible the number forty is God’s number for probation. So often during that time of probation, we just need to hear from God to regain our strength for the journey. The best way to hear from God is to remain in His Word and lean on His promises. Through proper faith and a diligent prayer life, we can achieve victory in our lives. The journey is never easy—we clearly see that in the Bible—and the journey is no respecter of persons. Regardless of who we are or how much we attend church, pray, or read the Bible, we can still find ourselves walking in the much-dreaded wilderness of
