    Chapter 1

After I returned home, my furniture and luggage did not arrive for another three weeks!

Mom said, Diane, maybe you should call those people again to find out the problem.

When I called the moving company, I was told that there had been a rash of furniture thefts and that they were under investigation by the state police. A few hours later, management called and stated my furniture was on its way for delivery. Mom had a doctor’s appointment in the late afternoon. As we left for mom’s appointment, the moving van arrived in our driveway. Finally, I had my furniture and luggage!

I took my mother for her six-month checkup. While we waited in the doctor’s office, my brother, Jimmy, called me on my cell phone. He stated that he had received a promotion and a raise. It’s hard for me to envision him working and not needing any money from home. I told him I was proud of the man he had become.

The doctor gave mom a clear health checkup but reminded her that she should walk at least five times a week. Mom does not like to exercise, but she promised her doctor that she would follow his prescription to the letter. I suggested that she could walk with me in the mornings. Mom said that she would try.

Once we left the doctor’s office, I rechecked my email. I had applied for a teaching job at the local college and was hired. I will be an instructor in the second-year law program. Once a week, I’ll work in the law library doing research.

I’d been riding Jimmy’s horse for a couple of weeks, and I was really sore. It’s been several years since I’d done any serious riding. Jimmy was attending school in New York. My mom, a high school student, and I had the responsibility of feeding and caring for his horse.

The early summer came with hotter weather, and several hurricanes were reported in the ocean. So, I decided to postpone booking a cruise for Mom and me until later in the season. Instead, we decided that we may visit my friends Allison and Joel in Florida. They had been asking us to come and visit the Sunshine State for several months now. I wanted to see the twins and get some much-needed beach time.

The college where I would be working started its semester around the middle of August. I was looking forward to meeting my students. It would be a challenge because it had been several years since I’d been in the classroom. This morning, Mom went grocery shopping. I
