    Chapter One

    Nina Fields opened her eyes and sat up slightly in bed. She looked around her bedroom, wondering what had awakened her. Everything looked exactly as it had when she’d gone to bed but her whole body was tense and she knew something was wrong.

    Nina held her breath and listened, straining to hear if anyone was in the house with her. She waited for what seem liked hours but she couldn’t hear anything. She shook her head. She’d felt jumpy for days, although she couldn’t have said why. Maybe she’d just been having a bad dream.

    Leaning back against her pillows, Nina tried to untense her muscles and relax. She was almost drifting off to sleep when she heard it again. She sat bolt upright in bed, eyes wide. That was definitely in the house. Someone had stepped on the creaky step at the bottom of the stairs. Her breath stopped in her lungs. They were coming upstairs, whoever they were.

    She was halfway across the room before she realised and pushing her heavy chest of drawers in front of the bedroom door. She pushed her bucket chair in front of the chest of drawers, and tried to wedge it securely between the drawer set and the bed, but there was still too much of a gap. She grabbed her phone from the bedside cabinet and called the police.

    She whispered into the phone, There’s someone in my house. They’re coming up the stairs. I need help. Please.

    The operator reassured her that the police were on the way but that didn’t stop her heart racing as she heard the footsteps coming slowly up the stairs.

    Please, they’re almost outside my door.

    Nina threw herself into the bucket chair and put her feet on the bed, pushing back with all her might to keep the chair and chest of drawers wedged firmly against the door. She heard someone turn the door handle and try to push the door open. The chest of drawers moved slightly and the bucket chair began to slip towards the bed. Nina pushed back as hard as she could, managing to push everything back into place and keep the door closed, but her thigh muscles were
