Smarter You, Smarter Them - Samuel Walker
INTRODUCTION
This is not a book that simply tells you the old cliché, If I can do it, you can do it, too;
it explains the Why to effective development, which gives you a better understanding of How it is possible to succeed in life. Smarter You, Smarter Them will influence the path you choose to travel in life. If we specifically understand our Why in life, it will fuel the How we go about achieving our goals.
This book became a thought while I was serving our country during my twenty-two years in the world’s most elite fighting force, the United States Marine Corps. My career required me to spend a lot of time away from my beautiful children, Samuel Jr., Solomon, and Lael. Most of this time was filled with volunteering and mentoring within the local communities of my newfound residence. As I committed my time to these efforts, a common factor arose while having conversations with different people. Not many understood the Why of their efforts in life in order to be successful, not even my own children. Many of us believe that, since our children are young, we have plenty of time to instill knowledge in them. But, a question we rarely ask ourselves is, What if something unexpectedly happens to me? How do I guide my children then?
I got just that wakeup call while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan during 2011. A rocket hit within yards of the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) building where I was calling my wife and children. My children were six and a newborn who’d been born days after I’d arrived in Afghanistan. The rocket vibration shook everyone out of their seats. At that time, I’d thought that I might not leave that place alive, that my children were too young to know who I was, and my youngest would never get the chance to meet me.
That’s why I’ve written this book.
I was born in a poverty environment, but, over many years, I’d decided to become a lifelong learner, someone who keeps acquiring new skills and capabilities well past the formal education years. Becoming a lifelong learner improved my life to levels I’d only dreamt of; I began to understand that KNOWLEDGE is the number one equalizer in life. Therefore, I must pass on the knowledge I’ve gained during my life as my legacy to the next generation of learners.
