I grew up in the north of England, in Manchester, Moss Side to be exact, in the 80’s before the Albanians and the rest of them moved in with their gang crime wave and drugs rackets. Where I was born most kids were into petty crime and I was no different to the rest. It seemed like the normal thing to do. Every Monday morning in school we would compare notes, bragging and showing off about what we had pinched over the weekend. It was kid’s stuff, nothing serious, but it was fun.

Then when I was about sixteen I had an ‘offer’ to move up a class and work with a team who were stealing cars, re spraying them and fitting new plates and then moving them down south to London to be sold on to the unsuspecting Joe Public. It was a great offer and beat nicking packs of cigarettes and booze from the supermarket and selling them for a few quid to all my mates. With the cars I could be earning hundreds on a good week so I jumped at the chance. I’d left school with no exam passes and no qualifications so a good job was out of the question, and anyway, my old man had been a thief all his life and seemed to do okay so why shouldn’t I follow in his footsteps?

But as normally happens shit happened, and o n my second job I got caught red-handed. Left by the others holding the baby, well the keys to a Mercedes actually, with the owner holding onto my shirt so tight that I could only wait for the cops to turn up and take me down the local station. That one got me three months in a young offender’s institution which was no big deal; in fact, doing a three monther raised my profile in the area and made me one of the lads to be with.

The second time I got caught I tried to fight my way out of it; I ain’t a big guy by any stretch of the imagination but I thought I could throw a few punches and run off quick but no chance.
