About this ebook

Part of a Standalone Series.

Layna Donovan has just moved to New York City and is having the time of her life. Or so she tells her parents back home because deep down, Layna is miserable. She works long hours as an executive assistant to a high-demanding boss, Colton Salvatore. He calls her at all hours of the night for the simplest things that could have waited until morning. When she doesn't answer her phone on the first few rings, he gets upset with her. She wants to throw in the towel and find a slower-paced job, but there's something about her boss that she just can't let go of. Even if he is a controlling night owl.

Colton Salvatore has lived a time or two. He knows what he likes and expects those around him to know too. As a boss, he has high expectations and will accept nothing but perfection. Many have called him a heartless tycoon to his face and behind his back. And he's okay with that because those words help fuel him to continue pushing for greater things. There is nothing in this world that he needs... Until Layna Donovan was hired as his assistant. She's the definition of the perfect woman and Colton finds himself realizing, she's the one thing missing from his life.

Will Layna be able to keep a level head when dealing with her sexy, arrogant boss and what he has to offer her? Or will she finally throw in the towel and walk away from something that seems too good to be true?

    SHIFTER’S DELIGHT

    LAYNA

The Big Apple’s fall breeze whipped around me as I stepped out of the cab and onto the sidewalk. With one hand, I closed the car door and the other hand I attempted to hold my jacket closed.

Why didn’t I zip it up? I muttered, fumbling with the zipper.

Another gust of harsh wind pushed against me. This time it caused me to become unsteady on my three-inch black stilettos. My arms flailed as I teetered backward towards the ground and a scream of panic left me.

Just as my body was about to collide with the ground something took hold of me. It wrapped around my waist, pulled me upright and into something firm. A familiar scent wrapped around me like a warm blanket. It was a scent that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand and made my knees weak.

Layna, a deep, husky familiar voice whispered against my ears. The warmth of his breath sent a shiver down my spine. I sucked in a sharp breath.

Cautiously I looked up to find mysterious, intense eyes staring down at me. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear they were glowing.

    Are you okay? he asked.

Ye... Yes, Sir. I’m okay, I replied to my boss, Colton Salvatore, whose embrace I was in.

Are you sure? You aren’t hurt?

I shook my head and lowered my gaze.

    Only my ego, Sir.

No reason for your ego to be hurt, he said, releasing his hold on me.

I bit back a whimper from the sudden loss of his warmth. That’s the effect Colton always had on me. Any time our bodies touched—no matter how small of a touch—it felt like I was losing a part of me, whenever we let go. It had been like that every single time since I started working for him three weeks ago.

The job was supposed to be temporary and a simple assignment. Well, as simple as filling in for an executive assistant could be. However, the job was a real pain in the ass. All five days had been a trial of my patience. Colton’s hot-headed attitude was a real picnic to deal with. It was never directed at me, but I always felt the aftermath of his temper towards the other employees.

Then there were Colton’s texts, calls, and emails at all hours of the night for the most tedious things. Twice I found myself at the office in my pajamas making coffee for him. When I had suggested that he make the coffee himself or order some and have it delivered, he informed me very firmly that I was the only one who knew how to make coffee to his liking.

Other times, he had me running to the office, in the middle of the night, to help him with the stupid printer. The guy was worth billions but didn’t know how to operate a simple office machine. It had been so frustrating and murdered my sleep schedule with his night owl habits.

On the final temp day, Jasper, the VP of Salvatore’s Industry, had called me into his office and told me the
