A Very Mountain Man Halloween - Shaw Hart

    Chapter 1

    Magnolia

I finish pumping my gas, my eyes bouncing around the gas station, searching the dark corners and jumping at every shadow and loud noise.

I can’t keep going like this. I’m exhausted and I’m not even done driving for the night. I look around once more. I should really get back on the road. I have hours of driving ahead of me, but if I don’t get some caffeine in me soon, I’m going to fall asleep at the wheel.

A few more cars come in, waiting for one of the three gas pumps, and I move my car over to the side of the building and park it in a spot there. I don’t see anyone suspicious looking, so I head around the corner and into the gas station. The door bangs shut behind me and I jump, letting out a small squeal as I look over my shoulder. There’s no one there, just the wind, and I try to shake off my anxiety as I hurry over to the coolers at the back of the shop.

I debate between Mountain Dew and Coke, deciding on the Mountain Dew before I move onto the energy drinks and coffee. There are only a few other customers in the gas station and most of them are up front by the register or over by the alcohol.

I hate living like this. I hate being this skittish all of the time. I wish that it would finally be over.

I keep watch on the front door as I grab the biggest cup they have and start filling it with coffee. It’s freezing outside and my car is an old beater whose heat likes to go on and off. I’m hoping that the coffee will warm me up.

I had a nice car before all of this. It was a few years old, but it ran like a dream. Even had heated seats which came in handy since I was living in Montana. I sold it before I left though. I knew that I was going to need the money while I was on the run.

I’m regretting that decision now and it’s not just because of the heating issue. It’s dark out and I hate driving on these back mountain roads in a car without four-wheel drive or snow tires.

I’m headed to California. I’m going to find one of the big cities there to hide out in. I had debated for a while which town was better. If I went to a small one, I would be able to spot anyone new in town, but I could get lost in the big city. I could scream for help there too in case Robert found me and that’s what decided it.

Because I know that Robert will find me.

    One day.

A shiver runs down my spine and I push thoughts of him out of my mind as I grab a lid for my coffee and attempt to juggle all of my drinks as I carry them up to the counter.

I set them down, smiling awkwardly at the cashier as I run back to grab a few snacks for the road. My stomach growls as I look over the chip choices and it reminds me that I haven’t had a decent meal in weeks.

I grab a couple of bags of chips and pretzels and a few candy bars before I head back up to the counter.

There’s a dark-haired guy in a flannel jacket checking out, a black beanie tugged low over his ears so that only a few strands curl over the edge. He looks like he’s a couple of years older than me. He’s hot, but that’s not what catches my attention right away.

He’s huge. He’s not just tall but wide too and a weird part of me wants to curl up against his side. I think that I’ve been driving for too long. I shake those thoughts off, looking away from his back and debate if I should grab a package of donuts too. He pays and heads out and I slide all of my items in front of the register.

I pay, taking note that I’m starting to run out of funds as I grab my bags and coffee cup and head out of the shop.

My fingers tighten on the plastic bags and I shiver as a gust of wind pushes me back a step. I thought I could handle winters in Montana but apparently, it’s got nothing on October in Fallen Peak.

There’s already a dusting of snow on the ground and clinging to the branches of the pine trees that this town is nestled among. It’s pretty and I wonder what it would be like to live here. It seems like a peaceful place and maybe in another life or after all of this is over, I’ll come back and settle down in a place like this.

I swear that I can feel people’s eyes on me and I try to convince myself that it’s just my imagination as I brace against the wind and hurry over to the side of the building where I parked my car.

I round the corner, coming to a screeching halt as I see my car.

All four tires have been slashed and my breath catches in my throat as I realize that he must have found me.

Robert, my stalker, has finally found me.

I drop the coffee and bags of snacks and it splashes on my pants and sneakers, the bottle of Mountain Dew rolling out and off the side of the curb.

I’m about to turn and sprint back inside the gas station, maybe call the police if I can borrow a phone. Before I can though, a hand clamps down around my mouth and another on my waist, holding me in place.

    My body locks up in
