    Everly

    My fingers brush over the cool smooth stones of the palace walls. A gentle breeze stirs the green grass, tickling my bare feet. I tilt my face up, letting the sun warm my face as I walk. My dark brown hair brushes against my waist, bouncing slightly with each step. Most days, I would be in the castle, locked away in the high tower, looking out over the kingdom, but it was such a nice day today that I just had to get outside.

    As Princess of Troping, I’m never allowed off of the palace grounds. Even more so since the attacks started. The rebel uprising has been gaining more support from the villagers, and they’ve been getting bolder, attacking carriages and other palace officials.

    I glance over my shoulder at the tall stone walls of the castle and let out a sigh. Ever since my mom passed away three years ago, it’s been just me and my stepdad, King Randall. My mom married him and became Queen of Troping when I was seven. My dad passed when I was five, and I don’t really remember him that well. My mom used to tell me stories about him, and from the little bit that I do remember, he was a good man, kind and generous even though we didn’t have much to give.

    My mom was the same way, always smiling and friendly with everyone. She was beautiful, the prettiest girl in the village, and it was her looks that caught the King’s attention. He asked her
