There is a truly staggering quantity of snow cascading from the sky, a gusty and endless swirl Theo can see through every window now that the sun has risen. He can hear the wind too, a noisy racket beyond the walls, and he takes comfort in knowing the December chill can't reach him here—inside his enormous condo on the topmost floor of a twelve-story building. The city beyond those flurries is almost entirely concealed by glittering white. Even the places right here on his own block have been rendered distant and ephemeral by the weather.

But here inside his living room, with the electric fireplace turned on—with a mug of coffee in his hands, a satisfying breakfast in his belly, and his mate seated on the floor beside him—Theo feels cozy and content.

Are you sure? Theo asks, peering up into the impossible swirls and shadows of Regan's eye sockets, as he picks up the lapsed thread of conversation. He tries to read any hint of emotion behind the blank expression, but so far he's coming up short of the reassurance he wants.

It's not that Regan doesn't emote. Some days, he seems almost human, for all the feelings his features can convey. There's no mistaking him for human, of course. No one could look at the sheer size of him—ten feet tall when he stands upright, and that's not counting his smoothly elegant wingspan—or the deep gray stone of his skin. The pronounced snout and tusk-like fangs protruding from his mouth add to that sense of magic and impossibility. And whenever Regan moves, body unencumbered by anything as unnecessary as clothes, the shift and bunch of his muscles makes it clear that he's not built like any human to walk the Earth.
