Impresario Arts School

Our research began in 2003 led by Dr Suraiya Shaik Ali with lesson plan assistance from Mrs Tess Scully; a specialist classroom teacher who inspired a rock and roller who was a late bloomer in education, popularly known as shake to put his years of entertainment into education. Shake was and is inspired to use entertainment in education and went on a quest to explore the world of education and found the quest not only challenging and exciting but incredibly meaningful because he was and is building his mind, body and spirit, in order to impart what he has learnt to his audience in an entertaining manner. Our research papers and lesson plans were submitted in 2012 and we received a private enrichment school status: Impresario Arts School, with an approved and registered curriculum: Imagine Inventions for Baby and Young Impresarios, by The Ministry of Education, Singapore. We ran a free preschool enrichment and subsidized after-school care and education for children from low-income families from 2012 to 2016. Due to shake’s medical condition, we had to take the school offline and continued our research and development in “Play to Learn”. Our studies to date have included young adult and corporate adult learning; cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, time and goal management, business and game development, as well as updating our modules on early childhood, primary and secondary education. Impresario Arts School is currently updating our engine: Imagine inventions with new programs based on artificial intelligence and promoting hands-on play; indoors and outdoors called GameOn! We are developing games for education powered by artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality. Our first publication “Research Abstract. Impresario Arts School” was an academic press book/scholarly monograph. Send enquiries to impresarioslab@gmail.com

‘With the power of knowledge and communication'

'we are empowered to face challenges, solve problems and shape our world’

    Chapter 2: History

The evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be broadly divided into the following stages:

The Early Years (the 1940s-1950s): During this period, the foundations of AI were laid by researchers such as John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Claude Shannon, and Alan Turing. They proposed the idea of creating machines that could perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as playing chess and solving mathematical problems. The earliest AI systems were rule-based and symbolic, with limited capabilities for processing and reasoning about sensory data.

The Rule-Based AI Era (the 1960s-1980s): During this period, researchers developed more sophisticated AI systems that could perform a wider range of tasks. These systems were based on hand-crafted rules and heuristics and used symbolic representations of knowledge to perform tasks such as diagnosing diseases and understanding natural language.

In the history of AI, there have been two main approaches to developing AI systems: rule-based and symbolic AI, and machine learning-based AI.

Rule-based and symbolic AI systems use a set of rules and symbols to represent knowledge and solve problems. They have limited capabilities for processing and reasoning about sensory data, such as images, audio, and text. For example, a rule-based system for diagnosing a medical condition might have a set of if-then rules that it uses to determine a diagnosis based on symptoms.

This approach was prevalent in the early days of AI research, but it has largely been replaced by machine learning-based approaches, which can automatically learn patterns in data and make predictions based on those patterns. Machine learning algorithms can be trained on large amounts of data, and they are much more flexible and capable of processing complex and unstructured data than rule-based systems.

So while rule-based and symbolic AI systems were an important stepping stone in the development of AI, they are now largely considered to be outdated and limited in their capabilities.

The Knowledge-Based AI Era (the 1980s-1990s): During this period, researchers developed AI systems that could learn from examples and experience. This led to the development of expert systems, which were capable of making decisions in specific domains, such as medical diagnosis and financial planning.

The Knowledge-Based AI Era refers to a period in the development of AI when researchers and practitioners focused on developing systems that could reason and solve problems based on a representation of knowledge. The systems were designed to operate like human experts, using their knowledge and experience to make decisions and solve problems.

In this era, AI systems were designed to learn from examples and experience, but the knowledge was explicitly encoded into the system by experts. The systems were rule-based and symbolic, meaning that they used a set of rules and symbols to represent knowledge. This approach was based on the idea that AI systems could be made to perform expert tasks by encoding the knowledge and expertise of human experts into the system.

Examples of knowledge-based AI systems include expert systems in fields such as medicine, finance, and engineering. These systems were capable of making decisions and solving problems based on a representation of the knowledge and experience of experts in the field. They were widely used in the 1980s and 1990s and helped to advance the field of AI.

However, the knowledge-based approach has its limitations. The systems were designed to work within a fixed set of rules and symbols, and they could not easily adapt to new situations or data. They were also limited in their ability to process and reason about sensory data, such as images, audio, and text.

Today, the focus has shifted towards machine learning-based AI systems, which can automatically learn from data and make predictions based on those patterns. These systems have proven to be much more flexible and capable of handling complex and unstructured data than knowledge-based systems.

How fantastic is our human brain?

The Machine Learning Era (1990s-present): In this era, AI has moved towards more data-driven approaches, with a focus on training machine learning models to make decisions based on patterns in large datasets. This has led to breakthroughs in computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing, among other areas.

The Machine Learning Era in AI refers to the current period in the development of AI, where the focus has shifted towards developing systems that can automatically learn from data and make predictions based on those patterns. In this era, AI systems are not explicitly programmed with a set of rules and symbols, but instead, they learn from experience and data.

Machine learning algorithms can be trained on large amounts of data, and they are capable of automatically discovering patterns and relationships in that data. This makes them well-suited for tasks such as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and recommendation systems.

There are several types of machine learning algorithms, including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. Supervised learning algorithms are trained on labelled data, where the correct output is known. Unsupervised learning algorithms are trained on unlabeled data, where the correct output is not known. Reinforcement learning algorithms learn from experience by receiving feedback in the form of rewards or penalties.

Important note for educators: The concept of reinforcement learning in AI has roots in the work of psychologist B.F. Skinner and his theories of operant conditioning. Skinner's work showed that behaviour can be shaped and modified through positive and negative reinforcement, such as rewards and penalties.

In reinforcement learning, this idea is applied to AI systems, where the algorithm receives feedback in the form of rewards or penalties for its actions. The algorithm learns from this feedback and adjusts its behaviour to maximize the reward over time. This approach has been used to train AI systems to perform a variety of tasks, such as playing games, controlling robots, and making decisions in dynamic environments.

Reinforcement learning has been a significant area of research in AI and has been used to develop cutting-edge algorithms and approaches. It has also been applied in a wide range of fields, from robotics and gaming to finance and healthcare. Overall, the concept of reinforcement learning has had a major impact on the development of AI and continues to be an active area of research and development.

The machine learning era has led to significant advancements in the field of AI, including the development of deep learning algorithms, which are capable of processing large amounts of data and automatically discovering complex patterns. These algorithms have been used to achieve state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of AI tasks, such as image classification and game playing.

Overall, the machine learning era has greatly expanded the capabilities of AI systems and has made it possible to develop AI systems that can perform complex tasks and provide insights into large amounts of data. The field is rapidly evolving, and researchers are continuing to develop new algorithms and approaches that can further extend the capabilities of AI.

The Deep Learning Era (2010s-present): The current era of AI is characterized by the use of deep neural networks, which are capable of learning complex representations of data. This has led to significant advancements in a wide range of tasks, including image classification, machine translation, and game-playing.

The Deep Learning Era in AI refers to the current period in the development of AI, where deep learning algorithms are the main focus of research and development. Deep learning algorithms are a type of machine learning algorithms that are based on artificial neural networks, which are designed to resemble the structure and function of the human brain.

In deep learning, artificial neural networks have many layers of interconnected nodes, or neurons, that process data. The data is transformed and processed as it passes through these layers, and the weights and biases of the neurons are adjusted to minimize the error of the predictions.

The use of deep learning algorithms has revolutionized the field of AI, leading to major advancements in tasks such as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and game playing. Deep learning algorithms have been used to achieve state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of tasks and have outperformed traditional machine learning algorithms in many cases.

One of the key benefits of deep learning is that it can automatically learn and extract features from raw data, without the need for manual feature engineering. This makes it well-suited for tasks such as image

classification, where the algorithm can learn to recognize patterns and objects in images without being explicitly told what to look for.

The deep learning era has also led to the development of new techniques and architectures, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs), that have
