    About Author

    Dedication

To the ones who make us better and forgive us for being wrong about ourselves.

    Chapter 1

    Verse

    Iam a liar.

First, it was small stuff. Fibs to seem cool with the guys. But the lies grew. One person I never lied to was Lawson. Until his little sister kissed me, I realized I would have to lie to him to be with her.

    Loyalty wasn't a lie.

    Love wasn't a lie.

But I guess all liars have their day when the truth comes out and your spotlight shines red. I knew my days were limited; I knew the glory days would soon get rough. There wasn’t enough goodness in the world to let me go free after I revealed my darkest secret yet.

It was a betrayal to my best friend.

But for now, it didn’t need to be revealed. There were no sins to confess until the clock ran out, and there we were, facing the crimes.

I promised Crimsyn I would take the fall, that no matter what happened between us, I would take the blame.

The first time you fall in love, it is supposed to be sweet and sincere. A kind of obsession that ruins you for a few months. But this connection with my best friend’s little sister wasn’t going away after one kiss.

My interest wasn’t swaying after the first taste. In fact, the more I sampled, the more I wanted, the more I needed it to fucking breathe.

Maybe it came back to guilt; I kept to Lawson’s side, even when I wanted to speak out. But I stood there and followed because I knew there wouldn’t be forgiveness when I finally spoke the truth.

Yo, Law! You see what Syn is wearing? We are walking off the field when I see my girlfriend wearing the tiniest skirt, barely covering her blessed ass.

It wouldn’t piss me off if we were alone. But the way she flaunts it around makes me believe she wants attention and not just mine.

Crimsyn, better change before the party, or I'll be forced to tell the boys you’re off-limits.

Asshole. Crimsyn barely glances at me as she stomps back to her car with her friend Stash. Her girl is coo-coo bananas. Last week she wore a raggedy prom dress to school with a leather jacket, sneakers, and a backward baseball cap.

Nobody wants to say it out loud, but she is probably a lesbian; hell, she is probably in love with Crimsyn.

Love you too, sis. Glad Lawson handled that before I had to make a scene.

The Krause twins are always throwing parties, whether they are good or not, we come because there isn’t much else to do in this town.

Man, did you hear another one of Knox's kids is coming to live with him. I inhale a long pull of the joint and hand it back to Lawson.

Who? His eyes are glazed over, watching the water ripple in the pool.

Calhoun, what is your new sister's name? Baby brother screams at Calhoun, one of the Krause twins, to answer.

Olallie, I think... Calhoun and Samson are sharing a beer and lighting another blunt.

Man, you don't know? Vayden doesn’t like vague answers.

She was never important until now. The harsh truth coming out of Calhoun’s mouth. He doesn't need another; he has enough sisters to worry about.

Which one of you Sonny boys are going to fall victim to the new little lovebird? Kalonie, the other Krause twin waltzes in, begging for that attention Crimsyn tried to pretend she didn’t want.

Hard pass. Lawson shakes his head at the idea.

    Verse, what about you?

Saving myself for the virgin Mary. Lean back and smile at the idea. Saving myself for your sister later tonight.

Baby brother, what about you? Vayden is the prime example of a teenage girl's fall in love.

Shit, I don’t know. I've already got a lot of issues; having a girlfriend would make it worse. There isn’t much Vayden wouldn’t do for someone he loves.

Kalonie’s eyes stalk all over Lawson like he is on the dinner menu. She has been after him for years. Her daddy would be proud; Patch, Lawson’s stepdad, is the old man’s best friend.

But Lawson just shrugs and turns his attention elsewhere, not wanting any nibble of that girl. She is a new breed of psycho.

We decide to take a swim; I find Lawson at the end of the pool, deep in thought.

    You good, man?

Yeah, just thinking about my padre.

Can’t hurt you anymore, Law. It's better this way. Patch has been a better father to you than Issy ever could. I check out the window; his father's prison is in the distance.

Yeah, you're right. I just have this crazy worry I'll end up in a cell next to Issy.

Bro got to stop the negativity. Because you know if you end up there, then chances are I'll be in there too. And I like my space.

We turn and see who joined the party, which must be her. The new talk of the town.

    Olallie Lovett-Krause.

She's mine. And I can’t believe what I am hearing. But it is at that exact moment, I realize Lawson has lost himself to an angel who needs saving.

What happens next is bullshit, Kalonie and Calhoun being spoiled brats.

They push the innocent girl over the edge.

What the fuck is your problem, Calhoun? Shit ain’t funny. I push aside all the other drunk spectators watching shit go down and not helping.

The twins are no good bullies.

When Vayden and Lawson get her out of the pool, I steady her, but she pushes away from my help. I see her hands shake, and I take a step back, giving her room.

She grabs a piece of plastic from behind her ears, throwing them in the trash as she leaves. We watch her go, and Kalonie is the one that breaks the silence with her laughter.

Lawson’s temper is rearing red, and before I can stop him, Calhoun is up against the wall, trying to find a breath.

Lawson’s cousin Samson tries to grab him, but I pull him back, knowing it won’t end well.

One day, you are going to have to pick a side, cousin. You better hope you’re on the right side. Lawson throws down the threat like a grenade waiting to go off. Let’s ditch this bitch. Lawson spits at their feet, enough excitement for one night.

Have fun with your hands tonight. I love a good last line.

I head for the front door and see a chick from school, she has big boobs, but all I keep thinking is where the hell Crimsyn went after the game because she didn’t come here.

There is no text or missed call on my phone. I hate that Syn does this, this cat and mouse game. I hate her games, she loves them, and I love to win her. Come find me, and you earn me bullshit.

One day it will fuck us all up.

Lawson? You still here, buddy? I look around and see Lawson isn’t by my side; I head down the hallway to find him.

Hey, you found her! Vayden was worried about her. Is she doing okay? Baby brother was murmuring about the incident. He doesn’t enjoy hate crimes of any kind. While Lawson and I can probably defend most of our actions. We don’t have the cleanest records.

You okay, pretty girl? Giving her a soft smile that waves a white flag.

Olallie moves her hands to her ears, and both Lawson and I don’t know what the hell to do.

She’s deaf, you idiots. All she can do is read your lips without the cochlear implants. But they were destroyed when the twins threw her in the pool. Vayden never passes up an opportunity to make us look like jackasses.
