The chill of the night air bit Ivan's cheeks as he crouched in the brush outside near Veryovkina Cave. Beside him, his partner Kirill shuddered and pulled his fur-lined hood tighter. Their breath formed icy plumes in the moonlight that spilled over the snow-blanket forest of the forested mountains.

This hunt had better pay off. The lone Amur leopards of the Russian Far East were rare and elusive creatures. But their spotted pelts would fetch a high price on the Chinese black market. Ivan and Kirill were seasoned poachers, yet bagging one of the endangered big cats was no easy task.

As the men awaited their quarry, the full moon emerged from behind wispy clouds. Its pale glow illuminated the entire forest with a strange, unearthly light. Then without warning, the wind shifted direction. An unnerving silence fell over the woods. Not even the chorus of nocturnal insects could be heard.

Ivan's instincts screamed that something wasn't right. He glanced upwards, where the branches of the ancient larch trees swayed gently as if beckoning. And there, perched on a sturdy bough, two large reflective eyes stared back at him. Ivan blinked rapidly, but the eyes remained fixed in his direction. They appeared oval-shaped and bulbous, like no animal he knew.

A sudden bright flash lit up the sky, forcing Ivan to avert his gaze. When he looked again, the glowing eyes had vanished. In their place stood two slender humanoid figures clad in tight silvery suits. Ivan froze, unable to process the sight before him. One of the figures raised its spindly arm and pointed directly at the
