Prologue

The hooded figure glided silently through the gloom of the ancient castle. In his skeletal hand he carried a lantern casting a pale glow to light the way. Approaching a pair of imposing doors, he produced an ornate key and turned it in the lock. The doors creaked open to reveal a chamber shrouded in darkness.

Another seeks entry, the guardian intoned, sensing a new presence beyond the veil between worlds. This was the Ritual Room where he initiated all souls that came before him, judging their worthiness to progress into the afterlife.

Ethereal tendrils drifted from the guardian's fingertips, weaving strange patterns in the air as he delved into faded memories and weighed the morality of deeds long past. Most souls were found wanting - their lies and misdeeds flaring as crimson blots in the tapestry. They would be consigned to the maze, doomed to wander endlessly rather than finding peace.

But this one's thread showed more virtue than flaw. The guardian nodded in satisfaction. This spirit had earned the right of passage. That meant unlocking the Chamber of Rebirth beyond, where guides would help the soul recall its purpose before returning to the great cycle.

The guardian summoned swirling mists to open the portal. But dangers lurked within those timeworn halls for the unwary. Ancient truths and eldritch secrets slumbered there, never meant to be disturbed. Not all who passed through the veil would complete the journey.

Enter pilgrim and remember - tread carefully.

The guardian watched the soul fade into the shimmering portal. Either enlightenment or oblivion awaited. The choice was not his to make. With those last whispered words, the ritual was complete. The chamber fell silent and dark once more.

Chapter 1

A New Beginning

Lina awoke with a shuddering gasp. Her eyes darted around the unfamiliar room as she struggled to regain her bearings. Where was she? The last thing she remembered was the screech of twisting metal, the crunch of glass... that truck barreling right toward her car.

Fear gripped her heart, and she couldn't shake the notion that she might be dead, that this surreal place was the afterlife. Despite the warmth enveloping her like a protective cocoon, uncertainty gnawed at her.
