Secrets on the Vine - Rad Chidley

    Chapter 1 –

Chloe took a deep breath as she turned into the long, tree-lined driveway that led to Sweetwater Vineyard. This was her first day on the job, and she could barely contain her excitement. She had spent the summer working part-time at the local ice cream shop in her small hometown, but now she had finally landed better seasonal work for her break before college started in the fall.

As she crested the hill, row after row of vines heavy with plump grapes came into view. The morning sun glinted off the surface of a large lake bordered by picnic tables and weeping willow trees on the vineyard grounds. In the distance, Chloe could see the sprawling mission-style main building made of white stucco with a terra cotta tile roof.

Chloe parked her dusty Honda Civic in the employee lot and consulted the emailed instructions from Delilah, the vineyard owner. She was to report to the main office upon arrival.

The inside of the main building was pleasantly cool compared to outside. Chloe followed signs down a wood-paneled hallway to the office. She was greeted by a friendly woman with curly gray hair who introduced herself as Martha, the office manager.

After going over some HR paperwork, Martha gave Chloe a quick tour around the main building, showing her the tasting room, event facilities, and staff kitchen.

You'll be working with our son, Aidan, said Martha. He handles the daily operations for the vineyard and winemaking. Aidan! she called down the hallway. Your new assistant is here!

Chloe felt instantly nervous at the prospect of meeting her new boss, wanting to make a good first impression. She smoothed the wrinkles from her sundress. A moment later, a side door opened and a man walked in. Chloe's heart did a little flip.

He was tall with broad shoulders and tan, muscular arms. A mop of dark curly hair framed his smiling face which boasted rich hazel eyes, dimpled cheeks, and a strong jawline.

Hi, I'm Aidan! he said warmly, extending his hand.

Chloe shook it, hoping her palms weren't sweaty. Chloe, she managed to respond, all her rehearsed greetings flying out of her head.

Welcome to Sweetwater, Aidan said. We're happy you'll be joining our team this summer. His smile seemed to radiate genuine excitement.

Aidan led her back outside for a walking tour of the extensive vineyard property. As they strolled between the rows of vines, Aidan explained his role managing the day-to-day operations. Chloe would be assisting with everything from monitoring grape development to harvesting and processing.

Have you worked at a vineyard before? Aidan asked.

Chloe shook her head. No, this is all new to me. But I'm a quick learner and excited to help however I can.

You'll do great, Aidan assured her...

Over the next few days, Chloe settled happily into her new routine. She learned how to check grape maturity, test sugar levels, assess for fungal damage and pests. Mornings were spent out inspecting vines or in the lab. Afternoons often involved bottling wine, packaging orders for shipment, and preparing wine tasting plates.

Chloe especially enjoyed the times when Aidan would take her into the oak barrel aging room and explain the nuances of the winemaking process, describing flavors like dark cherry and smoky oak. His passion for crafting the perfect vintage was obvious.

When they weren't working, Aidan showed Chloe his favorite local swimming holes and scenic hikes through the vineyards. Chloe found herself looking forward to their adventures, laughing freely at Aidan's jokes as she felt an undeniable connection growing.

One sunny Friday morning, Chloe arrived at work daydreaming about picnic possibilities with Aidan on her day off tomorrow. But when she entered the main building, she was surprised to find Martha looking distressed as she spoke with two uniformed police officers.

Chloe, thank goodness you're here, Martha said, waving her over anxiously. She explained that a vineyard guest who had been staying in one of their rental cottages had been found dead that morning - of seemingly unnatural causes.

Chloe's hand flew to her mouth in shock. The officers explained that the man, whose name was Benjamin West, appeared to have stumbled down the cottage basement stairs in the night. But certain things about the scene struck the responding officer as suspicious - possibly more than just an accident.

I know this is terrible timing, but would you two be able to show the officers around the cottage and answer any questions? Martha asked Aidan and Chloe. They'd like to conduct some interviews before allowing us to...tidy up.

Aidan nodded solemnly. Of course, we'll cooperate however we can.

Chloe's head was spinning as she followed Aidan and the officers up the tree-lined road that led past the main building to a cluster of charming cottages where guests could extend their vineyard experience. What could have possibly happened here?

They arrived at Cottage 3, normally a cozy little Craftsman bungalow that Chloe envied every time she passed it. Now, knowing it held a dead body inside, it took on a menacing air. Aidan gave Chloe's hand a quick squeeze before they entered, as if sensing her anxiety about the day's gruesome task...

The inside of Cottage 3 was in pristine order, with no initial signs of disturbance. Chloe felt uneasy as they followed the officers through the living area and kitchen, then down the narrow staircase leading to the basement.

At the bottom of the wooden steps lay the body of Benjamin West. He appeared to be in his late 40s, average build, wearing plaid pajama pants and a white t-shirt. His left leg was bent at an odd angle beneath him, eyes closed. Chloe shuddered at the sight, suddenly grateful she had skipped breakfast that morning.

While an officer took photos, the other asked Aidan and Chloe a series of questions about the layout of the basement and the cottage. They explained that guests often stored extra luggage and supplies down there if staying for extended periods. Aidan confirmed that he had given Mr. West a quick tour upon check-in earlier that week and all had seemed perfectly normal.

Did Mr. West interact with any other guests or staff during his stay? the officer asked.

Aidan and Chloe shared a look. Not that I'm aware of, Aidan said slowly. "Our cottage guests usually keep to themselves, coming to the main building only for wine
