Sharpening Carving Tools for Beginners - Lora S. Irish
Introduction
Just like any other skill or technique in woodcarving, sharpening is simply a matter of consistently using one process. There is no magic, no mystery, and no secret formula—just practice, practice, and more practice.
We will look at basic techniques, what supplies you’ll need for your sharpening kit, how to sharpen double-edged and single-edged blades, and how to care for your sharpening tools.
I’ve provided illustrations from a sharpening session so you can easily follow along to create a pristine, sharp, and bright cutting edge.
About This Booklet
Nearly 25 years ago, my dad taught me woodcarving. It was one of his favorite hobbies, and he enjoyed years of carving rifle stocks and pistol grips. The first lesson he insisted I learn—before I ever set a knife to wood—was sharpening. As he often reminded me, Woodcarving is a dangerous hobby, and the most dangerous tool is the dullest knife in your kit!
A dull knife will cut wood, but as it does, it grabs or digs into the wood, causing you to apply more force to move the blade. When the cut is finally made, the leading edge of the knife could pop out of the cut, reducing your control over the tool. That is when the cutting edge ends up cutting you. A sharp knife glides smoothly through the wood with only a medium, even pressure required. That gives you reasonable control over where the tool goes and when the cut ends.
The method I share here is the same method my dad taught me. At the end of those first lessons many years ago, he’d hold up a sheet of newspaper and, with one easy stroke, slice the knife down through the page. When I tried this myself, I would watch with total frustration as the paper folded over, untouched by my knife. AHH! Dad, this is impossible,
