CHAPTER 1
Mila had been awake for quite a while now, but she refused to open her eyes. She knew that once she got up from that bed, the sweet dream would have to stop. She knew that those arms holding her tight at that exact moment would have to let go, leaving a void.
Professor Kovalenko knew that the decision was hers and hers alone, but she also knew that it was the right way. She knew that the more she would postpone it, the harder it would be to stay on that track. So, she lifted Oleck’s arm from her waist and stood up. Mila looked around trying to find her clothes, but they were probably thrown somewhere on the way to the bedroom when they had let their passion take over. The only piece of clothing she could find was the special agent’s shirt which she took.
Mila was closing the final button when Oleck reached out to her and pulled her back into his embrace.
I think that shirt looks better on you than on me,
he giggled, his voice still containing sleep, and kissed the back of her neck.
She smiled and turned to face him. When he saw the sad look on her face, the special agent jumped to the side, not understanding what the matter was. What’s wrong, Mila? Did I do something to upset you?
The professor reached out and cupped his cheek. No. For the first time since we’ve known each other, you were actually perfect.
Oleck turned his head and kissed her hand. And that’s a problem because you like assholes, right?
Mila punched him gently and smiled a sad smile. As a matter of fact, I don’t. I just know how to pick them.
She then stood up once again and took in the surroundings. The apartment was just an improvised home made in a warehouse. That was funny because she hadn’t realized it before. There was just the bed and a desk with some computers and monitors on it. On the right, there was a door that she believed might lead to a bathroom. But that was about it. No fridge, no sink, and no dining table. There was just a coffee machine placed on the floor next to a socket.
Oleck realized what she was doing and laughed. You know, I didn’t decide on the interior design of this place. Normally, I don’t live like a street rat.
I know, Oleck. I am not stupid,
the reply came out more acid than she wanted.
I never said you were stupid, Mila. What’s up with you?
The special agent was starting to get nervous.
Because I am not stupid. I know that what happened here today can’t continue—
What!? Weren’t you the one that barged in here and told me to let go of my fears and just love you? Weren’t you the one who—
Yes, Oleck! Yes, I started all this beautiful madness, and it’s scary how perfectly we fit together. But I know that until we solve this mess, we can’t work as a couple. There are too many people involved and our love,
she stopped for a moment, yes, our love, because I do love you and I am sure that you feel the same - our love can get in the way of our judgment.
Oh, Mila, come on! Are you being serious? You said that we will figure things out, and I will learn how to protect you.
She placed a finger on his lips to make him stop talking. I always knew that you would keep me safe no matter what, but there are others that might need your protection, and I don’t want to be in the way of that.
He stood up and put his pants on. This was no longer a discussion he wanted to have naked. So what are you implying? That we erase everything that happened here? That we pretend we never.
he turned his back on her because he couldn’t even finish the sentence.
Mila also took to her feet and moved closer, hugging him from behind. She pressed her face against his back and whispered, No, Oleck. I just want to have a reason to stay alive ‘till the very end. I want to close this deal once and for all, get you a real apartment, and love you till you get bored of me.
The special agent placed his hands on hers and rubbed them gently. Okay. Have it your way. Tell me everything you found after I left England so we can get this over with.
He turned to face her and smiled. But first, let’s take you out of that shirt and into actual clothes. Because there’s no way, I can focus with you dressed like that.
She laughed, unbuttoned the shirt, and let it fall on the floor. An hour or so later, Mila left the apartment with a smirk on her face and the determination to find the missing puzzle piece as soon as possible.
CHAPTER 2
Maria was only half asleep when the baton hit the cell bars, making the whole room reverberate from the noise. Even though the sound took her by surprise, the young woman didn’t even flinch. She didn’t know who she was dealing with and wanted to see their reaction when they realized that Maria was defying them.
Just as Maria expected, it didn’t take longer than a few seconds for the man on the other side of the bars to lose his patience. Hey, skinny bitch! Wake up! It’s time to move.
The young woman opened her eyes but didn’t turn her head to see the man. She didn’t need to. Maria already knew everything she needed to know about him. He was not someone she had met when she had been taken to the station.
That meant that it was either a dick who wanted to show her who’s boss or Brother Christof was making his move.
Regardless of who the man was, Maria decided that the best way to handle things was to keep her mouth shut. So, the young woman took to her feet and to the bars. She then turned around, letting the officer, or whoever he was, cuff her.
My, my! You’re an exemplary criminal. Aren’t you curious about where we’re going?
