Love on Spruce Island - Daisy Landish

    One

Anna sucked on a piece of candy as the words on her screen blurred before her. A deadline loomed in front of her, and she had to prioritize other equally urgent tasks while working through a headache she’d woken up with that morning. It was already three in the afternoon, and she wasn’t anywhere near being finished.

I need two of me, she mumbled. Her fingers dug circles into her temples, willing the headache to go away. Of course, the pain only worsened because her body was striking for more vacation time. If Anna wasn’t going to take the initiative for some desperately needed self-care, her brain was going to shut it all down. But PTO was a luxury she couldn’t afford with her ever-increasing workload.

Anna smothered a faint laugh as she waved off her concern. I’m good. I just need to finish this article and turn it in. The minute I’m done, I have to train those newbies. And after that, I’m off to Spruce Island. I don’t have time for a break.

Kate was quiet for a moment. She shuffled through the documents on Anna’s desk, documents that Anna had long put in the important but not as important pile. Usually, Anna would be afraid that Kate might ruin her organizational system. But today, if Kate accidentally lost one or two of those to-do lists, Anna wouldn’t complain.

You do look swamped. How can I help? I really don’t have much going on today, so maybe if you ask nicely….

The tension left Anna’s shoulders. "Aren’t you kind. I have to train the new intakes by four. If you could fill in, that would
