Rowena was in trouble . Big time. This was the fourth time in the past week that the top boss had summoned her.

Hello Mrs. Claus. Is Santa in there? Mrs. Claus, Santa’s wife, was manning the secretary’s desk outside Santa’s office. She was a tiny, trim, woman who was always proper. Her snow-white hair was tied in a bun and she was wearing her trademark fitted red velvet skirt and a red velvet suit jacket with white fur trimming. She peered at Rowena over her rectangular, gold-rimmed spectacles. She did not look happy either.

He is mighty displeased, Ro. You know that’s bad. Mrs. Claus said.

Rowena sighed deeply. For a guy who was always jolly, it was really bad indeed! She gulped as she stared at the strong oak door before she tentatively knocked.

Enter, said Santa’s deep voice.

I’m terribly disappointed in you, child! Santa said as soon as she entered his room.

Rowena stood in front of Santa’s ornate, carved mahogany desk, with her eyes downcast and her hands linked together in front of her. She was wearing the green fleece button-down dress with a V-necked collar and white fur trimming along the hem, which was the standard-issue uniform for all of Santa’s helpers.

She wisely refrained from saying anything. What could she say after all?
