    Santa's Baby - Cassie Donoghue

    Chapter‌ ‌1‌: Remy

    4 days until Christmas Eve

Being thirty-four and dressed like an elf wasn’t exactly what she’d had in mind for Christmas. How long is this for again? Remy gazed at her reflection and smoothed a hand over the red velvet, white fur-trimmed costume that clung to her curves.

Just a few days until Christmas Eve, Liz replied. It won’t be all that bad.

Remy’s gaze traveled down to the pointy shoes on her feet. I just didn’t think joining in on the company’s charity event would mean I’d end up in an elf costume, is all. She caught her colleague’s raised brow. Don’t get me wrong: I love helping the kids and all. Good cause, blah blah, and all that. But would you look at these... She wiggled her feet, Wizard of Oz style.

If only they would take her home. She could be wrapped up in front of the fire, her favorite holiday movie on as she munched on popcorn, before ending the night between the sheets with her vibrator, entertaining some hot fantasy of Santa tiptoeing into her room to have his cream and cookies before dashing away to the next house.

Liz chuckled, unknowingly pulling Remy back into reality. A few businesses are in on it, so it’s definitely not just you.

And yet, I don’t see you embarrassing yourself all in the name of holiday altruism.

No. They smiled. You don’t. Now, for the finishing touch. They lifted a hat, complete with a jingle bell on the end, and fitted it to Remy’s head. Ta-da.

    I hate you, ya know.

I know. Smugness was all over their face. But you do look pretty cute.

"I’m always cute. This, however, is pushing it. She flicked the bell at the end and sighed. All right. Let’s get this over with."

Liz led her out onto the floor. The pillars of the mall were wrapped in warm, white twinkling lights. Soft seasonal Muzak played over the speakers, doing a not-so-great attempt at Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In the middle, not far from the food court, was Santa’s Village. Malls like these were a dying breed, but somehow their town had managed to hold onto one. Nothing makes Gen X-ers and elder Millennials nostalgic quite like a good indoor shopping center.

Inside a gated circle, littered with a handful of lit Christmas trees and fake snow, was half a large sleigh, sectioned to create a benched seat. NORTH POLE glared back in bright red from a peppermint pole off to the right. A small shed on the other side bore the sign SANTA’S WORKSHOP. Oversized presents were stacked haphazardly around it. Children and their parents were already lined up outside the gate as other elves readied the village.

Santa himself was nowhere to be seen.

Maybe things wouldn’t have turned out this way if she hadn’t bought Liz an electronic handwarmer last Christmas. Maybe she was being punished. Remind me to buy you a bigger present this year, she whispered to Liz, who only chuckled before winking and making their way to the food court.

Remy was happy she hadn’t been stuck in some of the other costumes, with garish green lines and mismatched shoes. As soon as she’d had the thought, a guy wearing such walked toward her. He’d be cute if it wasn’t for the hideous outfit. Horizontal lines really were a crime against humanity, unless one was an actual piece of candy.

Hi, thanks so much for helping out. He smiled and extended a friendly hand. You must be Remy, right? I’m Amar.

No problem. Thanks for having me. She returned the smile and handshake, then took a deep breath. So, where do you need me?

He turned slightly and pointed to the back. Actually, you’re going to be in charge of hustling Santa to and fro, and also getting him anything he needs, like water or snacks. Oh, and help manage any unruly kids up toward the front of the line. They can get a little cranky.

    Joy.

Right. So, Santa’s assistant basically? Why was this like a scene from one of her fantasies come to life?

Yeah, basically. He chuckled softly. So, can you go to the back and check to see if Santa’s ready? There’s usually a big to-do about his entrance the first night, and we need to get the show on the road.

    She nodded. Can do.

Sliding past Amar and some other elves, she pushed a red curtain out of the way and dipped in. The back was far less festive than the Village. After looking around for a moment, she found the door marked Santa.
