The Only Amazon FBA Guide You’ll Ever Need - CLWUSA Education

    INTRODUCTION

Social media can work to a business owner's advantage. Someone with a brilliant product in a small city in the middle of nowhere can now be a big player in the world marketplace.

    ~ Bill Capodagli

Every purchase we make feels like it takes more out of our pocket than it used to. And for most people, income has remained relatively flat despite the spike in living costs. If you've been seeking solutions to make life a little cheaper, you might have looked into ways of getting better deals, reducing expenses, and doing more with what little you have. But for how long can you do this? Frugality, like so many other aspects of life, has its limit. There's only so much downsizing you can do before your style gets cramped or your lifestyle suffers a bit too much. However, there is another solution to the rising living costs - making more money. Instead of tightening your purse strings, why not buy a bigger purse and find ways of filling it?

The phrase side hustle elicits different reactions from different people. Some call it a godsend because of the financial freedom it has afforded them, while others call it a scam because of the losses they incurred or the lack of progress. No matter what each of these people think, they are right. Depending on how you approach your new business venture, your results will be different. Business owners in the same niche boast different financial statements, not because they have different products but because of how they undertook their operations. With this book, our focus will be on helping you start an Amazon FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) business that can push you a little (or a lot) closer to your financial goals.

But there are so many sellers on Amazon; how can I compete with that? Isn't the Amazon marketplace already saturated? Where will I find a new product to sell? I don't like copying others.

I have heard these objections so many times. When I started my Amazon store six years ago, my family and friends had the same questions and fears. But this is not the right way of looking at it. With 197 million customers, Amazon gives you instant access to the world's largest and most trusted marketplace. Why would you not take a chance at grabbing even a tiny fraction of it? There may be 9.6 million registered third-party sellers, but only 2.6 million are actively selling on the platform. A higher percentage of sellers are inactive, so why not cast your lot with the active sellers? Additionally, there are millions of products to choose from, which gives you a fighting chance if you take the time to find your niche, the right product, and use the right tools to run your business.

Choosing Amazon FBA as a side hustle offers you the perks of running a business with minimal hassle since Amazon does the most time-intensive parts of the business for you. Because your focus will be on finding the right products, updating the listings, and advertising your products - you still get time to focus on your main job or other businesses. This can all be operated remotely, from the comfort of your own home or anywhere else you choose to be, so long as you are connected to the internet. While you will need to put in a tremendous amount of work when you're first starting out, this will gradually decrease as you get the hang of it and better understand each aspect of the business. Amazon FBA will also allow you to add more money to your pocket, both for business and personal use. Furthermore, 22% of Amazon’s $469 billion revenue in 2021 was from third-party sellers, like you and me, with 89% of these sellers being FBA merchants.

Because FBA sellers piggyback on Amazon’s brand reputation, many customers will choose to buy from sellers whose products have the FBA (or prime) tags as opposed to fulfilled by seller. Customers understand that the product’s shipping is reliable and fast, and they can always contact Amazon in case there are any faults with the product. Because of this, a high percentage of FBA sellers are raking in revenue, with 53% earning anywhere from $500 to $10,000 monthly. If revenue numbers are not enough to convince you, here is another number - 56% of Amazon FBA sellers have profit margins of 6% to 25%. These are milestones you can achieve by dedicating just a few hours to your business each week, ensuring that everything is optimized.

This book is created to help you as you take the first giant step into your journey as an Amazon FBA seller. Drawing from my 10-year experience in e-commerce and six years as an Amazon FBA seller, this book is a culmination of my experience. I may have fumbled in the beginning, but I was able to grow, scale, and eventually sell one of my businesses - and my inventory and revenue have grown consistently through the years.

Together, we'll explore everything you need to know about running an Amazon FBA account, including:

The various acronyms you may or may have yet to come across.

    What Amazon FBA really is?

How to set up your account.

Useful tools for running your FBA business.

    Amazon FBA logistics.

    Where to source products?

    Marketing.

This book is curated to ensure that everything you learn will help your business, setting it up for success. All that you could ever need to know to get started with Amazon FBA is within these pages, written with step-by-step guidelines that are easy to follow and implement. This is the last Amazon FBA book that you'll ever need.

If you've been waiting for a sign to become an Amazon seller, or you're looking for a business to supplement your income, look no further!

Just turn the page and take the first step into your new FBA life.

    WHAT IS AMAZON FBA?

From its inception in the early '90s, Amazon has exhibited unprecedented growth year after year. This growth was actually pretty slow and steady until 2006 when Amazon introduced the Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) model to its third-party sellers. Before the advent of FBA in September 2006, sellers were responsible for packing, shipping, and customer service, which made it almost impossible to compete with Amazon's first-party sellers. Firstly, shipping costs were dynamic, as sellers had to factor in the location of each individual customer. Amazon, on the other hand, was charging a flat fee regardless of location. Second, sellers were subjected to the whims of the logistics companies they chose, which would, in most cases, lead to sellers incurring losses on their sales. Because of these complications, many third-party sellers were reluctant to sell on Amazon.

With the introduction of FBA in 2006, however, many of these issues were instantly resolved. Amazon was giving sellers a chance to tap into Amazon's resources at a fee. With FBA, Amazon would now handle storage, packaging, and shipping. Customers would also be dealing with Amazon customer care in case of any issues with the products. On paper, this was a win-win situation. Amazon would get a fee for handling the bulk of the seller's work, and the seller would tap into Amazon's resources and reputation. Additionally, the seller now had more time to zero in on the more important aspects of the business - product sourcing, listing, and marketing.

It’s no wonder that Amazon’s third-party-seller revenue began growing at an unprecedented pace. In the second quarter of 2007, just a few months after the introduction of FBA, third-party sellers accounted for 26% of Amazon’s paid units. And 15 years later, by the second quarter of 2022, the bulk of Amazon’s paid units were via third-party sellers, at 57%. Third-party sellers are largely responsible for Amazon’s revenue growth. Out of Amazon’s 2021 $610 billion revenue, $390 billion was from third-party sellers. In 2020, third-party sellers accounted for $300 billion of Amazon’s $490 billion revenue. And in 2019, third-party sellers brought in $200 billion of Amazon’s $335 billion revenue.

As a third-party Amazon seller, you can choose between one of two fulfillment options; Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) or Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA). Both options have their merits and demerits, but unless you plan on selling big, bulky items, FBA is likely the better choice for you. The way FBA works is relatively simple…

Once your account is fully set up and you've sourced your products, you need to ship the merchandise to an Amazon fulfillment center. The address details will be provided by Amazon, as well as the packaging guidelines. Amazon will store the products for you, and once an order is placed, they will process the order, pack it, and ship it to the customer. In case of any issues, returns, or refunds, Amazon will handle these for you.

As the seller, your work is to ensure that there is enough inventory on hand, and you make the necessary updates in case of product additions, removals, or price changes. Every two weeks, or when you specify, Amazon will send you your revenue.

Amazon FBA sellers get to enjoy the perks of free Prime shipping of their items, a convenience many Amazon customers use because of the speed of delivery and cost advantage.

Despite the simplicity of Amazon FBA's operation, it is important to highlight that not all products are automatically approved for third-party sellers. While we will talk about this in greater detail later, here's a quick rundown of what I mean. Amazon does have a list of products that are classed as gated, that is, they require pre-approval before they can be listed. Through gating, Amazon seeks to protect consumers from receiving forged or counterfeit items, as well as items that are copyrighted. For example, sports collectibles are gated because there is a high chance of forgeries flooding the Amazon marketplace. Additionally, some branded items, like clothing, are also gated because of the risk of counterfeit items. As you are starting out on Amazon, it is advisable to take a dive into the list of ungated items, those that don't require pre-approval before listing. Toys and games are some of the more profitable ventures, and so are electronic peripherals. However, ensure that your products are ungated before sourcing and listing.

So, what does Amazon get out of the deal? Amazon charges fees for the convenience it offers the seller. For every item sold, Amazon charges a referral fee. Essentially, this is a percentage of the price of every item sold through the site. Your inventory will also incur inventory storage fees, which fluctuate in relation to the time of year and the amount of product you have at the Amazon warehouse. Inventory storage fees are higher during holiday seasons when demand spikes. While the fee incurred depends on the size and weight of the product, you incur higher fees the longer your products remain in the warehouses without selling. Other fees include the FBA fulfillment fees, packaging fees if you opt for branded shipping, return fees, and inventory return fees. These may seem a lot, but the rates are highly competitive and worth it
