The Blatheen Fairy - 1
The Glens of Antrim, situated in the Realm of Ulster, is the traditional home of Fairies of Hibernia. However, Fairies also dwell in other Realms of Hibernia.
In the western Realm of Connacht, King Finbarr ruled over a host of Fairies. With his wife Oona, they build vast underground cities. He was so powerful that when Daoine came to Terra, they had to seek permission to build their dwellings above his underground cities!
In Leinster, King Ailill ruled. He was particularly tall for a fairy and was especially fond of precious metals and gems. Through his mother’s bloodline, he laid claim to Connacht, but he never pushed the issue as the fairies of Connacht bought him off with a gold band as wide as his face!
Midair was a fairy who claimed the throne of Munster. He had a tumultuous relationship with some of his subjects. He fell in love with the beautiful Etain, who was married to Eochaid. Midair stole her away. They fled Munster and were transformed into swans bound by a golden chain.
Iubdan was the fairy king of Ulster. He was very, very small but proud and selfish, and this caused him to be overthrown by Maab, who then became Queen Maab, the fairy queen of Ulster.
It was in the reign of Queen Maab that Blatheen was born. On the equinox of the seventh year of Queen Maab’s reign, Blatheen was born to her parents Finnula and Arion.
When Fairies desire a baby fairy, they simply wish for one. A baby fairy is born with tiny wings, and like a fledging bird, they cannot fly.
Fairy parents are very protective of their young. They constantly hover over them, protecting them from their natural perils such as cold, rain, and strong winds. They do this by creating a silver screen over their nest, which is usually in treetops.
But what concerns them most is the danger from their enemies. These are numerous. Caws, an evil crow-like bird, is always on the lookout for unguarded fairy nests.
The stupid Trolls will shake the tree until the nest falls to the ground. The fall can seriously injure the baby fairy. Then there are the Red Caps, who can breathe fire on the tree.
The parents must always be vigilant of these evil foes. They must have special spells with which to repel these dastardly creatures. But they have allies in the Glens that assist them.
The animals of forests, such as the rabbits, the deer, the foxes, the badgers, and even the wolves, will howl at the approach of the evil ones.
All these will warn the fairy parents of the entrance of any hideous brutes into the Glens. The many birds that dwell in the forests will likewise raise the alarm. One particular bird friend was Owl Ferox.
Owl Ferox had lived in the Glens for many years. He was a large owl equipped with a very sharp beak, powerful razor talons, acute hearing, and laser vision.
If any Trolls or such vermin entered the forest, he would immediately harass them by pecking them viciously till they fled the scene.
Smaller malignant rodent-like creatures such as Malarats, Horned Toadbeakers, and Snapping Lizards, he would grip firmly, peck fiercely, and then drop them into the nearest body of water. He was particularly vigilant at night.
On one particularly stormy night, a Troll entered the glade and changed himself into a Mambas snake. He sidled along the forest floor till he came to the tree in which baby Blatheen and her parents were sleeping. Slowly, he slithered up the tree. He poised himself directly above the sleeping family and opened his fanged mouth.
There was a swish of wings, and Owl Ferox’s talons grabbed his green slimy head, flew high into the dark, windy night, and released him to fall against the jagged rocks below.
As the stupid Troll fell, he belatedly changed himself back from snake to Troll, and disastrous was his impact against the rocks.
Owl Ferox returned to Blatheen’s nest and related what had taken place. From that day on, a deep bond was formed between Blatheen and Owl Ferox.
As the days, weeks, and months passed, Blatheen grew and flourished. Each morning, her parents would take her on short flights. Eventually, she could soar above the tree tops, glide across the ponds, and zigzag through the forest and land without disturbing so much as a leaf.
But more importantly, she was taught the spells that were essential to her survival. She learned to put Daoine into a pleasant sleep and create fairy lights to amuse little Daoine.
This trick left Daoine parents confused as to why their children were so amused at apparently nothing.
She learned spells to repel evil creatures. And most importantly, she learned how and when to use Fairy dust.
Blatheen did not grow up alone. She spent her childhood in the company of other Fairy children.
Her closest circle of friends were Caitlín, Eimíle, Aoife, and Fiona. They learned together and played together. Elder Fairies held school for these young ones. They passed on the history of the Tuath De Danann, the ancestors of the Fairies.
As well, they were taught the methods of defense, the relationships with Daoine, their main enemies as the Red Caps, Trolls, and Kelpie, and to prepare for war in the service of Queen Maab.
With the movement of time measured in the cycle of the sun, Blatheen and her friends passed into adulthood.
On the eve of the seventh summer solstice, Blatheen with Catlín, Eimile, Aoife, Fionnaghal, and a host of other young fairies knelt before Queen Maab and pledged themselves to her service.
Queen Maab addressed the assembly. Síógí! Óga! Welcome to the forces in defense of the Realm of Ulster. This Solstice Eve, you have left the ways of childhood to become full members of the Glens. Relish this time, and when the Realm is threatened, I will call on you. Go now and enjoy our beautiful Glens.
Blatheen and her friends left the gathering and joined their parents in a feast to celebrate their coming of age. Blatheen was now ready for many adventures.
Blatheen and the Red Cap - 2
Blatheen was not very happy. In fact, she was very, very sad. She walked between the tall grasses, and finding a dew drop, she looked at her reflection.
She was not surprised that it made her look fat in the middle and tiny on her head and
