    Chapter 1:

The Beginning - A Place of Magic for Everyone

Violet Jenkins sat on the ground picking grass out of her hair--again. The sky was full of kites. But after one hundred tries, she’d fallen on her face at least ten times. All she could get her kite to do was to flitter and flop. Sometimes it didn’t even bother to flitter and just flopped straight to the ground.

A pretty girl with auburn hair and eyes a sparkling shade of blue, Violet was no ordinary ten- year-old. As soon as she caught her breath she’d be back at it again, trying as hard as the first time to get her kite in the air.

Her friend JJ’s fire-breathing dragon kite caught her eye. Sometimes it would fly perfectly, but loved to dive headfirst into the ground. Although she laughed at the dragon’s nosedive, at least it got into the air. Next, there was Ronnie’s kite. Shaped like an eagle, it was dark blue and grey, flying so high it looked like it could reach the sun. Jenny Raisen’s honeybee kite was so cute other girls were jealous.

Violet’s kite was the most beautiful. She designed and made it herself of special material with the boldest colors. She designed it this way so sunbeams would bounce off the kite producing a radiant burst of colors. If only she could get it to fly. There were so many kites, why did hers have to be the only one that wouldn’t fly?

She heard the faintest sounds of an ice cream cart. Mr. Snowflake, the ice-cream man and milkman, was pushing his cart in her direction. She hurried to him.

Hello, Mr. Snowflake, Violet greeted him.

The tall man wearing a uniform and bowtie smiled. He said, Hello, Violet. Today you want an ice cream cone.

Why, yes I do, she replied.

Mr. Snowflake continued, Today you want your ice cream cone to be strawberry and vanilla swirls, dipped in hot fudge.

"That’s exactly what I want. It’s like magic, the way you always know exactly what I want
