About this ebook

A USA TODAY BESTSELLER!

From Edgar-Award nominee Elle Cosimano, comes Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead—the hilarious and heart-pounding follow-up to Finlay Donovan is Killing It.

"Cosimano skillfully combines suspense and laughs in the manner of Janet Evanovich’s early (and best) novels, finished off with a metafictional twist."—New York Times Book Review

"A funny and smart, twisty and surprising series."—Megan Miranda

Finlay Donovan is—once again—struggling to finish her next novel and keep her head above water as a single mother of two. On the bright side, she has her live-in nanny and confidant Vero to rely on, and the only dead body she's dealt with lately is that of her daughter's pet goldfish.

On the not-so-bright side, someone out there wants her ex-husband, Steven, out of the picture. Permanently. Whatever else Steven may be, he's a good father, but saving him will send her down a rabbit hole of hit-women disguised as soccer moms, and a little bit more involvement with the Russian mob than she'd like.

Meanwhile, Vero's keeping secrets, and Detective Nick Anthony seems determined to get back into her life. He may be a hot cop, but Finlay's first priority is preventing her family from sleeping with the fishes... and if that means bending a few laws then so be it.

With her next book's deadline looming and an ex-husband to keep alive, Finlay is quickly coming to the end of her rope. She can only hope there isn't a noose at the end of it...

How do Finlay and Vero keep making such stupid choices?? But once you accept their stupidity the book is a fun, quirky, read.

Finlay Donavan Knocks ‘Em Dead by Elle Cosimano is a 2022 Minotaur Books publication. Someone wants to kill Finlay’s ex-husband, Steven, and believe it or not… It's not Finlay. In fact, she’s trying to save him, but he’s refusing to believe he’s in any danger. But, if Steven is on someone’s hit list, Finlay’s children could be in danger too. So, it’s up to Finlay and Vero to save the day…A bit of humor is so cathartic against the backdrop of our stressful and challenging world. That’s why I’ve come to appreciate books like this one more and more. Just like the rest of us, Covid and lockdowns along with the seemingly endless chaos going on, authors have struggled to concentrate, much less create humor. But Elle Cosimano manages to pull it together, despite these challenges, to give her readers a riotously funny caper, with some outstanding dark humor, and a terrific little surprise twist at the end, for the cherry on top. I’m loving the partnership between Finlay and Vero and think this pairing could take the series far into the future. The pace is brisk, without sacrificing the characterizations, and the dialogue is crisp and sharp. Overall, a fabulous follow-up, and another fun, easy, highly entertaining adventure for Finlay and the gang! Hopefully, there will be many more! 4 stars

Someone wants Finlay Donovan's ex-husband killed and it's up to Finlay and Vero to keep him alive and find the murderer. Same hyjinz as the first book with a lot of twists and turns and a surprise ending. Also a set up for book 3. A fun read. Hopefully Elle Cosimano can keep it up for book 3. To me, each successive book in a series gets harder, especially if they are humorous.

Finlay Donovan is back to her usual life as a writer, where the only dead bodies she has to deal with are fictional. (Well, except for her daughter's unfortunate pet goldfish.) However, someone on a sketchy web forum has put out a hit on her ex -- and it looks like a real contract killer has taken the bait! While Finlay finds Steven infuriating, she'd never want him dead, but how can she keep him safe?I enjoyed this second entry in the series almost as much as the first. If you liked the first book, this one is worth reading.

Not only is Finlay Donovan short of funds and struggling with writer's block as her book deadline looms but someone in an online woman's chatroom seems to want Finlay's ex-husband dead and is willing to pay hard cash for it. Not that Finlay would mind too much seeing Steven dead or that she couldn't use the cash herself but the kids love him so now she and Vero, her accountant and best friend, must discover who's behind the post as well as the identity of the person who seems willing to accept it. And, most important of all, survive while doing it.Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead is the second in the Finlay Donovan Series by Elle Cosimano. The plot is full of twists and turns with red herrings galore to keep the reader guessing and entertained. There is also moments of hilarity as well as some romantic interludes but the main relationship is between Finlay and Vero who will clearly do anything for each other although admittedly it doesn't always work out as intended. There are some references to the first book which admittedly I haven't read...yet but they didn't distract from this story or break my immersion in the story. This is a fun, fast, and very enjoyable mystery and I recommend it highly. Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader as a part of a Quick Takes Catch-up post, emphasizing pithiness, not thoroughness.---I was a little worried how the premise would carry over to a sequel, and I clearly shouldn't have—largely because Cosimano didn't just repeat the way the first book went. It was very much an "okay, so now with that finished, what comes next?"—assuming that Finlay and Vero don't just wholly abandon their new revenue stream. We get some important new information about Vero—making a lot of what she did in the first book make sense. Finlay makes some smart romantic moves—and there's some decent movement on the divorce front. All in all, a solid sequel that shows that this can be a series with legs, not just a quirky one-off.

Ridiculously delightful, more fun than the first. The story starts right where the first book leaves off. I would read these in order. Finlay is still a divorced mother, trying to balance her roles as a mother of two small children, working romantic suspense writer on a deadline, ex-wife of a man who wronged her and who continues to act like a petulant child as he reaps what he sowed, potential love interest of two very sexy men, a de facto detective, a sister and daughter, and the best friend/employer of her nanny/accountant/partner-in-crime Vero. When she tumbles backward into learning of a threat to one or more of the people she holds dear she sets out to stop a plot in process and to learn who is trying to kill people who matter to her. As they say, hijinks ensue. The tone of these books reminds me of the Tess Monaghan books by Laura Lipmann, and that is pretty high praise. The story though is quite different, and Tess and Finlay are very different women. The mystery here is complex, the romances are sweet, and the central relationship here is between Finlay and Vero (and to some extent the more minor characters, Amy and Theresa.) This series celebrates true female friendship. There are things I would never have done for any of the men in my life (other than my son -- for him there is nothing I wouldn't do) that I would do without question for my best friend and the same is true of Finlay and Vero. The story is funny and smart and twisty too. I cannot wait until this series gets adapted to film. Maybe Anna Kendrick as Finlay? I caught a Pitch Perfect reference in this book ("on three or after three?") so maybe that was a hint and also there is a side character, Theresa, that was written for Anna Camp? Selena Gomez as Vero? I will be casting this one in my head until the project is officially cast.

Finlay Donovan is once again struggling with a book deadline and is low on money. While she is trying to deal with those issues, Finlay discovers that in an online chat room, someone is trying to buy a hit on her ex-husband, Steven. It is imperative that Finlay discovers who wants Steven dead before the plot ends up on the radar of the police, especially Detective Nick Anthony, who wants back into Finlay's life. If Nick begins to investigate the online forum, Finlay's posts might be discovered, and that might lead back to the deaths in which she was previously involved, so she and Vero are now on the trail of the online killer who accepted the contract on Steven.Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead is the second entry in the Finlay Donovan series. As with the first book, the characters are well developed and their sense of urgency throughout the book is palpable. Finlay still makes incredibly bad decisions, but before the end of the book, she begins to suffer some of the consequences of her actions, including the fallout from the love triangle in which she finds herself. There are some very good plot twists in this book, and one that is either a typo, or perhaps will become more clear in future books. Overall, Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead is clever mystery with an interesting romantic subplot. 4 1/2 stars.

Finding a good cozy mystery that really knocks your socks off is tough, but Elle Cosimano has written one with Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead, the second book in her new series. Finlay is struggling with writer’s block for her new book, trying to raise two young kids, dealing with ex-husband troubles as well as the attentions of a handsome young law student and an equally handsome police detective. Now, she discovers that someone appears to be posting on an online forum looking for someone to kill her ex-husband. Finlay and her live-in friend/babysitter/accountant Vero have to find out who is soliciting a killer and stop them before her kids are short one dad!Finlay’s past adventures have put her on the periphery of Russian mobsters which turns out to be a blessing and a curse. Finlay and Vero make some choices and get themselves in some predicaments that would make Lucy Ricardo and Ethel blush. Finlay is quick on her feet and able to pivot from one suspect to the next with each new fact she discovers. Her quick thinking also keeps her agent and publisher at bay as she spins events from her life into a plot for a novel. Finlay also juggles a suspicious ex-husband who wants to spend more time with his kids and two love interests who want to spend more time with her. Add in some intrusive family members and you’ve got a fast-paced and very funny adventure. The strong, entertaining characters and their relationship with each other and those around them are a big part of what makes this such a fun book. Readers new to the series jump into the deep end a little bit at the beginning, which picks up and builds on events from the first book in the series. It’s not a big hurdle and you’ll quickly find your feet and enjoy this fast-paced and wildly entertaining book. This series is going on my list of ones to keep up with and I can’t wait for the next adventure!I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher.

This book was so much fun! After enjoying the first Finlay Donovan book, there was no question that I need to get my hands on the follow-up novel. I was eager to see what kind of trouble Finlay and Vero would get themselves into in this installment and hoped to find a few laughs along the way. I was impressed by this second installment in the series and had an absolute blast reading this book.Finlay is no fan of her ex-husband, Steven, but when she finds out someone wants him dead, she decides that she needs to make sure he remains among the living. He doesn’t believe that he is in any danger so Finlay and Vero have their work cut out for them. Finlay and Vero make a great team but they do seem to be able to get themselves in trouble without even trying. There was never a dull moment and I loved that the mystery had me guessing until the very end. There is just a bit of romance to balance out the action. Finlay is in a bit of a love triangle which I am not usually a fan of but I think it works in this book. I think that I have decided that I am firmly in team Nick at this point and hope to see their relationship progress in future installments. I love that the romance is really more in the background of the story. Finlay and Vero are able to handle what needs to be done all on their own and they lean on each other, instead of a man, for support.I would definitely recommend this book to others. This is a fun series that is able to provide more than a few laughs along with a great story. I cannot wait to read more of Finlay’s adventures.I received a digital review copy of this book from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley.

I had so much fun reading Finlay Donovan is Killing It last year! It was the first book in a series from Elle Cosimano. The second entry - Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead - releases today. And it's just as good as the first book.Who is Finlay and why does she make me laugh? Well, she's a single mom of two, an author with an editor breathing down her neck for a new book (Finlay does take inspiration from her own situation), a sister, a daughter, an ex who is being quite a pain - and a contract killer. Well, technically not really - but the criminal underworld she's blundered across thinks she is. And fair enough, as she seems to stumble across bodies with frequency. Finlay is just so likeable. Her struggles are real and she's a hot mess a lot of the time. Every lead character deserves a dependable sidekick right? In this case it's Vero, Finlay's childminder. She's clever, has a sardonic sense of humor - and seems to have some dodgy connections herself.Cosimano's plotting is inventive, clever and engaging. There's no down time in this book - action (and a body with the threat of another) propel things along at a fast paced clip, Yes, some situations are improbable, but just go with it. There's a side of romance included too. And more than one choice! So, yes - a humorous mystery with a side of romance. What more could you want? Escapist reading at it's best. And yes, this reader will be waiting for the third entry.I do think, for full effect, it would be good to read the first book and then pick up this latest. If you've enjoyed Janet Evanovich books, you'll want to meet Finlay Donovan.

Finlay Donovan is back. It's only been a month since Finlay was mistaken for a hitwoman and became embroiled in a murder mystery to rival one of her own stories. Now, she's struggling a bit with the sequel. Someone has put a hit out on her ex-husband, and it seems like someone is already on the job. In trying to discover who, Finlay finds herself a member of an underground chat forum which seems to specifically cater to women who want the problems in their lives taken care of...quietly. Luckily, Finlay has nanny turned friend/accomplice Vero on her side. Except, Vero is definitely keeping something from her. With Detective Nick Anthony back in Finlay's orbit, and another body thrown in their laps again, Finlay and Vero will have to make some tough deals if they want to come out of this free and clear. This sequel has been one of my most highly anticipated books of the year. I loved the first one, and I loved this one too. There was a lot from the first book that wasn't entirely solved by the end, and Knocks 'Em Dead continues developing those story threads, almost actually knitting themselves into a fine throw blanket by now :). I've been really impressed with how Elle Cosimano forms and twists the storyline, really taking into consideration all varying aspects and making the conclusion very plausible and worthwhile. All while dropping hints of where things will go in the next book. A huge hint dropped is peeling back the layers of the mysterious Vero. She's been Finlay's right-hand person from the start, but really they've only known each other a short time. And while burying a body will bond people together, there's still a lot left open about who Vero is. I'm hoping the next book will give us more of these insights. I also read it as a possible spin-off with Vero at the foreground and Finlay on the assist, but either way, I'm here for it. Finlay is a character that you root for. You want her to come out on top, you want to see her succeed. I feel the pressure of balancing being a mother with her writing career. Elle Cosimano writes about these things with compassion and understanding. But then we get the added pleasure of seeing Finlay become embroiled in solving her own mysteries and all the danger that goes along with it. I love seeing a smart, resourceful woman who is also self-employed and a mom getting stuff done.Being a romance fan, I don't even mind the fact that Finlay's in a sort-of love triangle between law student Julian and Police Detective Nick (although I do have my favorite of the two). At the end of the day, this is about Finlay and I like that nothing takes away from that fact. Her choices are her own. Honestly, I cannot wait to get another book in this series! If you haven't yet started it's highly recommended and definitely required to start at the beginning. If you are up to date. Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Finlay Donovan is back! And once again, she is finding herself in all kinds of difficult situations. In this second book in the series, Finlay discovers that someone is out to kill her ex-husband.Of course, Finlay and her devoted nanny, Vero, set out to find who wants Steven dead. During all of this investigating, Finlay’s agent is breathing down her neck to meet her next book deadline. After a few more dead bodies, some shootouts and car chases, Finlay manages to discover who is involved and get her book written.Readers will get to know some new characters and learn more about the ones from the first book. Some foreshadowing hints at more adventures ahead for Finlay. Her career is looking up and so is her romantic life. This was a fun adventure and I’m sure readers will be anxiously awaiting the third book in the series. Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read an advance copy. I am happy to recommend this book and give my honest review.

The girl team is back, Yay. The fun and craziness is also back by the heap loads. Finlay and her nanny cum accountant, Vero, do not follow any set of rules that are grounded in the “normal world” so how could anything be even close to pale and boring?! Still silly, still hilarious, Ellen Cosimano blends just the right amount of “what would you did if someone was a trying to kill your ex-husband and father of your children, as you are messing around with a younger law school guy who is meeting your sexual needs, and while being being romanced by a gorgeous cop who might have an inkling of the trouble you are almost in, and trying to balance a sister who is a cop and a Mother would would like you to get more involved with the gorgeous cop and less involved with the ex-husband while the ex-husband refuses to believe that he is in danger and only wants to call his lawyer to keep threatening more court action to gain greater custody of the children. Phew. Finley is up to her neck in all sorts of nonsense not the least is trying to uncover the would be assassin of her husband before he is actually killed. There, I think that about sums it up except for the constant grin and laughter for over 350 pages. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/ Minotaur Books for a copy.

The second installment in the Finlay Donovan series is just as madcap as the first. Finlay has discovered that someone wants her ex-husband, Steven, dead. This leads to a series of adventures with Findlay’s friend, Vero, as they try to determine who is trying to hire a contract killer to kill Steven. Each situation is outlandish and hilarious. You will find yourself rooting for Finlay at every turn. She has a good heart, and is a faithful friend. Finlay Donovan is the perfect heroine! Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.#NetGalley #ElleCosimano #FinlayDonovanKnocksEmDead

Although I didn't think that this book was as excellent as the first, it did entertain me, keep me engaged, and kept me laughing and wondering.I find it interesting that the themes seem similar to that of author Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series. So if you are a lover of that series, you will most likely love this one also. The primary and secondary female characters are always getting into trouble somehow. Finlay is finding herself in a three-way romantic situation (but that may change soon), and Vero has done something that I wouldn't forgive all that readily. On the other hand, the idea of someone wanting Finlay's husband dead was an interesting one and kept me guessing.Unfortunately, we do end on a tiny bit of a cliff-hanger. Not enough of a one to rally tick me off, but just enough to know that there will be more books and that Finlay is no longer her own person.*ARC is provided by the publisher, Minotaur/Macmillan Books, the author, and NetGalley. Thank you very much.

There is a clearly discernable plot, but I get so caught up in the farce/satire/humor that I laugh myself silly and have to go back to find the thread. The characters certainly are, and the distractions are just too funny. Absolutely loved it!I requested and received a free ebook copy from St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
