Chapter 1

A Syrupy Mess

THUMP! Oh no. Peppermint, don’t eat that! Paige exclaimed in frustration as a spilled syrupy mess interrupted her morning routine.

Your fur will get all sticky, and I already gave you a bath last night. How am I gonna clean this up and not be late for the school bus? MMOOOMM!!

As Paige struggled to hold back her determined puppy, her mom rushed into the kitchen. Oh, dear! Paige, what happened?

I was making a Paige Special and dropped the syrup, Paige replied.

A Paige Special...? asked her mom as she scanned the interesting combination of ingredients on the counter.

Yes, Mother, a peanut butter, banana, and syrup sandwich on honey wheat toast, she said matter-of-factly.

Paige’s mom giggled. Of course, Paige would create such a unique sandwich. She had always been creative. Since the age of five, Paige had dressed in cool and funky patterns, mixing and matching colors. It was no surprise that she would also create a signature sandwich that was just as quirky.

Now I know where all the bananas are going, her mom joked. As she began to clean up, Paige finished packing her lunch and hurried to the bus.

Paige was excited to go to school but not looking forward to seeing Brooklyn, Melina, and Darcy.

As soon as she boarded the bus, she heard Brooklyn joke, "Melina... Darcy... On today’s episode of ‘What is Paige Wearing?’ we have stripes in every direction with colors that no normal person would EVER put together… And to top it off, that same polka dot bow that she’s been wearing since second grade.

Melina laughed. I mean seriously, did you get dressed in the dark? she said as an embarrassed Paige walked by them, looking for an empty seat.

A voice from the back of the bus joined in, Hey Paige... PICK A PATTERN! The bus filled with laughter.

Paige sank in her seat. The ride to school was only ten minutes, but each morning for Paige felt like an eternity.

I can’t wait until this bus ride is over, she sighed.
