Book One: The Summer I Turned Pretty
Chapter 1
Belly
Conklin takes us on a captivating journey as she navigates the trials and tribulations of her sixteenth year. Setting the scene in the picturesque town of Cousins Beach, Belly, her brother Steven, and their vivacious mother, Laurel, embark on their annual summer escapade. Their destination? A charming beach house owned by the Fisher family - the lively Susannah and her intriguing teenage sons, Conrad and Jeremiah.
With a friendship that spans nearly a decade between Laurel and Susannah, it's no surprise that Susannah believes destiny has a hand in Belly's future, convinced she'll find love within the Fisher clan. And indeed, Belly has harbored a crush on Conrad for longer than she can remember. As our story unfolds, our protagonists arrive at their summer haven, where the Fisher brothers eagerly await their arrival. To their astonishment, both boys quickly notice the subtle changes in Belly's appearance - the transformation from glasses to contact lenses being just one of them.
Chapter 2
The next chapter transports you to a different time, back to when Belly was twelve years old, and everything felt like it revolved around that one summer. In this vivid recollection, Belly recounts the bittersweet experience of heartbreak for the very first time. You see, Conrad, the object of her affection, out of the blue invites her for a night out at the boardwalk, setting her heart aflutter. In her mind, she envisions Conrad holding her hand and stealing a kiss, as their bond deepens. Sadly, upon their arrival at the boardwalk, the reality hits her hard: Conrad's attention is drawn to an attractive girl operating one of the carnival games. It becomes painfully clear that Conrad has a crush on this girl. Belly, trying to be brave, musters up the courage to strike up a conversation with her, even though it stings to see Conrad growing closer to someone else. Feeling the weight of heartache, Belly quietly walks away, concealing her tears as she heads towards the Ferris wheel. As fate would have it, little did she know that Conrad had won a stuffed polar bear for her, aptly named Junior Mint, in an attempt to soften the blow of his unintentional betrayal. She carefully places Junior Mint on her bedroom dresser at the summer house, silently holding onto the memories of that emotional rollercoaster.
Chapter 3
The story jumps to the present as Belly heads to the pool where the guys are hanging out. Steven and Jeremiah grab her and playfully plunge her into the water – it's a yearly ritual on their first day at the summer house. In the past, Belly used to complain to her mom about the boys' pranks. But this summer, she decides to go along with the fun. She even tricks Conrad by asking him for help getting out of the pool, only to pull him in with her. As he playfully tugs on her foot, a moment of electric tension sparks between them.
Chapter 4
As the teenagers finish their pool time, Susannah pops up and enthusiastically greets the Conklins, apologizing for not being there when they arrived. Belly rushes in for a welcoming hug, her eyes catching the sight of Susannah's slender figure. In return, Susannah can't help but notice how Belly has blossomed into a stunning young woman. It's in that moment Belly realizes she sees herself through Susannah's eyes. This summer marks a turning point for Belly, where everything transforms and she truly becomes the summer she turned pretty
. Exciting changes await!
Chapter 5
On their first night at the summer house, the families gather for a lively dinner. Belly can't help but notice Conrad pulling away from Susannah's touch. She's taken aback to see Jeremiah's transformed physique after a year of hitting the gym. The surprises continue as Conrad reveals his sudden resignation from the football team, without providing a clear explanation. To everyone's surprise, he decides to work as a busser at the local country club buffet instead of being a lifeguard alongside Jeremiah, as they'd originally planned. The summer ahead is filled with unexpected twists and turns for this group of young adults.
Chapter 6
In the upcoming chapter, we take a trip down memory lane to when Belly was just ten years old. Conrad, being the spontaneous guy he is, suggests a beach sleepover with Steven and Jeremiah. Belly, wanting to join in the fun, is swiftly rejected by the boys. While her brother and Jeremiah engage in a little friendly teasing, Conrad comes to her defense and bids her adieu with a heartwarming goodbye as they make their way to the beach. And in that very moment, Belly's infatuation with Conrad begins. Get ready for a tale of young love and self-discovery!
Chapter 7
The Fishers might have wealth, but their summer abode isn't about being fancy. It's all about creating a comfortable and laid-back vibe. Belly's got her own room in one wing, just like Jeremiah and Conrad. Steven and the folks crash in the other wing. And you know what? The teenagers all have to deal with sharing a bathroom!
Chapter 8
Belly eagerly brings up Aubrey during their post-dinner conversation with Conrad. Intrigued by Steven's mention of a deepening connection, Belly prods Conrad for details. Conrad, disheartened, reveals that Aubrey ended their relationship, claiming he had transformed into someone unrecognizable. Curiosity piqued, Belly inquires further about the changes, but Conrad casually dismisses the question, merely stating that evolution is a natural part of life's journey.
Chapter 9
On that very evening after her heart-to-heart with Conrad, Belly decides to take a solo swim. As she glides through the water, she's taken aback to find Conrad chilling by the poolside, puffing on a cigarette. She boldly urges him to kick the habit, and he teasingly throws the question back at her, wondering what she'd be willing to offer him in return. For a brief moment, there's a charged atmosphere between them, before Conrad leaves Belly alone in the water.
Chapter 10
Later, Laurel insists that Belly should give her father a call. But as soon as her mother steps out of the room, Belly sets the phone aside, ignoring the urge to dial his number. With her parents' recent divorce, Belly firmly believes that her father should be the one to reach out, not the other way around. Besides, she firmly holds the belief that even though her dad and Mr. Fisher occasionally visit the Cousins Beach house, the summers truly belong to the moms and the kids who spend every single day here.
Chapter 11
Suddenly, the narrative takes us back to the summer when nine-year-old Belly was deep in a card game with the mothers and children on the porch. Jeremiah, intrigued, questions Laurel about why she calls Susannah by the nickname Beck,
discovering that it's actually her maiden name. In an attempt to switch things up, Laurel suggests a game of Go Fish, but Belly playfully accuses her of cheating each time they play. Susannah chuckles and remarks that Belly is just like her mother, yet Laurel quickly interjects, claiming that Belly takes after her father.
Chapter 12
Laurel had just gone through a tough breakup with Belly and Steven's dad, who happens to be a college professor. He left their house one summer, while the rest of the family was off at Cousins Beach. Surprisingly, Laurel wasn't really affected by the separation. Now, Belly gets to see her dad on weekends and crashes at his place. The apartment has a weird smell -
