    Part I

    Chapter One

The Kingdom of Linhaus was not an enchanting place, but it was by all accounts an enchanted one. The walls were guarded by arcane wards to repel dragons, trolls, and other fearsome creatures that once menaced the ancestors of the humans. It had been centuries since the last dragon attack and many people had begun to think it was all a myth. The rolling green fields that stretched around the kingdom’s walls only extended about five miles terminating at a dense, hilly forest that went on forever into the west. Even standing on top of the tallest tower didn’t allow you to see beyond the trees. To the east a vast, warm sea lapped at the sandy shores and cliffs where Linhaus built its prized trading port. Strange spices and fabrics were carried off of these boats and sailors who told stories of exotic ports. Ciarra, a young woman who had only known the world from the lower commons of Linhaus, would listen to the sailors describe these places and the strange creatures that dwelled there with awe and envy. She often wondered how much of it was true. Elven kingdoms with towers made of glass that were invisible in the day, but revealed themselves under moonlight. Cities where gnomes had enslaved humans to work in deep dark mines, islands where people wore practically nothing and romanced each other in plain view of everyone in the village. She imagined what it would be like to jump aboard a ship and leave everything behind. She fantasized about starting a new life, meeting an generous aristocrat from an exotic land and becoming a member of high society, far removed from the struggles of her life in the commons. The idea of so many diverse realms overwhelmed and fascinated her. She wanted to see these places for herself, but she could never afford passage on any ship that moored in Linhaus. These were merchant vessels, not pleasure cruises
