    Thieves’ Guild Legends: Stolen Virtues

    Chapter One

The Kingdom of Linhaus was not an enchanting place, but it was by all accounts an enchanted one. The walls were guarded by arcane wards to repel dragons, trolls, and other fearsome creatures that once menaced the ancestors of the humans. It had been centuries since the last dragon attack and many people had begun to think it was all a myth. The rolling green fields that stretched around the kingdom’s walls only extended about five miles terminating at a dense, hilly forest that went on forever into the west. Even standing on top of the tallest tower didn’t allow you to see beyond the trees. To the east a vast, warm sea lapped at the sandy shores and cliffs where Linhaus built its prized trading port. Strange spices and fabrics were carried off of these boats and sailors who told stories of exotic ports. Ciarra, a young woman who had only known the world from the lower commons of Linhaus, would listen to the sailors describe these places and the strange creatures that dwelled there with awe and envy. She often wondered how much of it was true. Elven kingdoms with towers made of glass that were invisible in the day, but revealed themselves under moonlight. Cities where gnomes had enslaved humans to work in deep dark mines, islands where people wore practically nothing and romanced each other in plain view of everyone in the village. She imagined what it would be like to jump aboard a ship and leave everything behind. She fantasized about starting a new life, meeting an generous aristocrat from an exotic land and becoming a member of high society, far removed from the struggles of her life in the commons. The idea of so many diverse realms overwhelmed and fascinated her. She wanted to see these places for herself, but she could never afford passage on any ship that moored in Linhaus. These were merchant vessels, not pleasure cruises or ferries, and women were forbidden to work on the merchant fleet. Sailors believed that women brought bad luck to the crew, though anyone who had ever met a sailor knew it was actually about protecting the kingdom’s women from the ravenous desperation that gnaws at men in isolation.

Thinking about new places made her legs restless, which was inconvenient because she was trying to stay still. Ciarra was hiding behind a large pile of crates on the docks, listening to the sailors as they unloaded their goods from a recent trip across the sea. She did not come to hear tales of adventure today, though. She was here to work. As she crouched behind the wooden crates, she tightened the laces around her knee-high leather boots, ensuring that her pants were tucked into them so that she could run uninhibited if she were caught. Her job was unorthodox, but not entirely illegal. She was a member of the Thieves Guild, an official guild that the Kingdom of Linhaus only sanctioned on the grounds that they couldn’t stamp it out in the last three hundred years. The guild was too elusive, too good at their work, and their work benefited the elites the most. As long as they could be a resource to help the aristocracy stay in power, there was no need to pursue a crusade against them. Of course, thievery was still officially a crime punishable by imprisonment, so the Thieves Guild had to practice discretion. The guards took pride in arresting members of the Guild. They were professionals, masters of stealth, persuasion, evasion, and seduction. It was a rare occasion when a guild member was sent to the dungeons, but they never remained in there for long. A fully vetted guild member could not be contained by any prison cell for more than a day or two.

She was watching the crew, waiting for them to finish unloading their goods before she made her move. The vessel was supposed to be loaded with ore from some dwarven kingdom a few weeks away by boat. She wasn’t here for the ore, though. She came for something easier to carry. A rare moonstone, a navigational tool the elves used to guide them when the clouds covered the stars in the night sky. Stones like these were rare in Linhaus and still somewhat difficult to obtain in elven realms, but this one had been wrongfully taken by this ship’s captain. Its original owner wanted it back and Ciarra’s sense of justice compelled her to fulfill the request.

That’s the last of it. Let’s load ourselves up at the pub, said one sailor to another.

As they stepped off the dock, Ciarra listened to their footsteps stomping down the creaking wooden planks of the dock. As the steps grew quieter, she knew it was her time to shine. The massive cargo hold of the galleon wasn’t likely where the moonstone would be kept. If it was anywhere it would be in the captain’s cabin, and Ciarra knew this from months of watching the ships, waiting for the right one to come in. The sailors had removed the gangplank and the only physical connection that the ship had to the dock was a few heavy ropes tying it to the posts jutting out of the water. It was monitored by only two guards, lightly armored in a highly ornate steel plate outfit with brightly colored fabric underneath. They held pikes that looked more ornamental than functional with swirling patterns etched into the tips and ribbons tied around the top of their shafts. They were foreigners, but Ciarra didn’t know enough about the world to tell which realm they came from. They patrolled the decks, maintaining a visible presence in an attempt to ward off intruders. That wouldn’t work on her. She was trained to intrude and enjoyed employing distractions.

She had some time to think about her plan while she waited among the cargo. She took a small dagger out of the belt that adorned the waist of her skin tight black pants and began to pry off a plank of wood from one of the crates. The wood was hard and heavy, the only kind that could safely contain piles of ore. A long sheet of canvas sat bundled on the ground nearby, the remnants of
