For Mom, for always believing in me and supporting me when it felt like no one else did, for fighting a battle of chronic illness and being one of the toughest nuts I know.
For my grandmother, who wanted to die on her own terms, and who was not granted that freedom by those around her.
And for my friends and strangers who are fighting battles that few others can understand. May you find joy through the darkness.
Dear Readers,
This book contains depictions of blood, murder, death, mental illness, terminal enchantment, body morphing, and suicidal ideation.
If any of these topics are not to your liking, then please, I promise not to be offended that you have chosen to set this down and read something else.

What do you want?
Devyn asked the woman in front of zir. Haven’t seen you in years.
I’m here to collect on that favor you owe me,
she said. Her name was Akácia, an old friend of zirs. She and Devyn sat across from each other at a table at the Lindworm’s Fire, an exorcist and assorted light mage guild for the backcountry of the central region.
Devyn leaned back in zir seat, gripping tightly the square glass lantern in zir hand.
Fantastic. You barely write and never send telegrams, suddenly you show up and you’re not even here to catch up and say ‘hi’ or grab a drink?
Sorry, dear, I’ve had a lot going on since the last time we were together.
She glanced at Devyn’s lantern cautiously. You keeping her contained?

It was from a dragon horde!
That’s even worse! Dragons are immune to human curses!
"Anyways, he needs to get his curse lifted but doesn’t know how. We’ve tried healers of all types and none of them have been able to help."
Right. What’s the curse entail? Or the medallion?
He turns into a horrible beast every half-moon.
Half-moon? What type of beast? Serpent? Wolf? Cat? Bear? Sounds like a weird strain of lycanthropy.
I…I’m not sure, actually. You’d have to see it for yourself, but it’s not lycanthropy, we’ve tried that already. It’s not vampirism either.
Intrigued, Devyn shifted forward to meet Akácia’s gaze. Zie stared through her as she gave zir an expression Devyn recognized to be desperation. Tears welled in the corners of her brown eyes.
Please,
she pleaded, you’re the only one who can help him. He’s suffering. It only gets worse with each change. I just want him to stop suffering from this curse. You’re his last hope.
Zie extended a hand to her.
"I’ll do whatever I can to help. I
