    Maling inhales through her teeth.

This is a problem, Alliyah said, her accent making the words crisp with diction. She touched the bruises on Maling and put pressure to them.

Maling cringed a little before Alliyah stopped.

Alliyah got her phone and went to her translator app; she entered some text and then put in the command to convert to Vietnamese.

Did he hurt you? Alliyah asked.

Maling took the phone and paused for a moment before answering.

Yes, she said aloud, looking down and touching the cross necklace around her neck.

Okay, said Alliyah. She rubbed her forehead and squinted her eyes. She got up from the bed the two were sitting on and retrieved a water bottle from the fridge.

This will help the swelling. Alliyah got the water bottle and presses it on Maling’s leg bruise as Maling typed.

    What I do? Maling said.

Alliyah rubbed her temple for a second. Then she typed something.

What do you want to do? Alliyah handed the phone back to Maling. She went back to putting pressure on Maling's bruises as Maling typed in her response.

    What is choices?

Leave, said Alliyah, taking Maling’s hand. Leave him.

Maling shook her head and started to tear up.

But. Hell, Maling said, looking down. She started to sob.

Alliyah got the tissues off the nightstand and handed them to Maling.

He’s using God as a weapon, said Alliyah.

Alliyah put the water bottle back on Maling's bruises when the phone was shoved in her face once more.

    Sorry, I not recognize spoke.

    Alliyah smiled at Maling.

It’s okay, I struggled with English when I first got here too. Keep this on. She handed the device back to Maling.

Maling tilts her head and furrows her brow. Then, Maling’s phone buzzed. Then it buzzed again. And again. Maling looked at Alliyah with sorrowful eyes.

Alliyah takes the phone for herself and reads the texts from Maling’s husband.

‘Babe, I’m sorry, I have a problem.’ ‘I love you.’ ‘Please come back.’

Alliyah gritted her teeth and shook her head.

Rat. He’s a rat. Alliyah put the phone in the nightstand drawer. She decided to type

something onto her phone. Then she gave the phone to Maling, who was smiling with wet eyes.

I’m glad we’re friends. You’re very kind and a great nail artist.

Maling beamed and let out a giggle.

I fortunate we friends, too. Aliens help another.

Alliyah grinned at her. The two enjoyed each other’s silence.

Ice, said Alliyah, pointing at the door, then at Maling’s wounds. She nodded and left

    the room.

Maling opened the drawer, grabbed her phone, and peeked. There were now numerous texts from her husband. She turned off the phone and took out the SIM card. Then, she laid on the bed with her arms spread out and exhaled.

    Awakening by Naomi Caspian

    I awoke in darkness.

When I say ‘awoke,’ I mean it wasn’t like being born. People are born into loud spaces with mothers to hold them and healers to tend to them. They are small and barely cognizant. I gained my senses in a place that was utterly quiet, utterly dark. I was aware of myself, my surroundings, my mind.

And, most importantly, I looked exactly how I am now: Bones. Only bones. Ungrowable, unfeeling, cold bones.

When I say ‘awoke,’ I mean I used to be alive, a regular person, but I died. I
