    Demigods - D. K. KNIGHT

    Chapter 1

The young man stood there in the middle of the street as the clouds rolled in. Thunder roared and lightning streaked across the sky. Suddenly, rain fell so heavily that the streets flooded within minutes. People were running to get out of the rain, but the young man couldn't seem to move and the harder he tried, the harder he couldn't. As he struggled to move, a sudden bolt of lightning crashed down, a wave of water rose, and crashed down. Out of the shadows of the lit street, three figures stood before him. A knock at the door snapped him awake. He sat up in bed and a voice called out in a whisper.

Soon you will know who you are.

Another voice called from the door.

    Sweetheart, are you awake?

He sat there for a few moments thinking about the dream, but it felt so real to him. Then the voice called out again, inquiring if he's awake, because she didn't want him to be late. He jumped out of bed and got dressed as he noticed the clock said 8:00 am. He rushed out of his room, grabbed a quick breakfast, and rushed out the door. As he reached the street, the bus was just arriving.

The young man entered the bus, headed towards the back, and sat down. The bus pulled away and the young man sat there as everyone was conversing in conversation, and as the bus pulled up to the next stop. Kids piled in and took seats, but he had a strange feeling as he noticed the last kid in a dark red sweatshirt with a wolverine on it heading towards the back. The kid sat across from him and glanced in his direction, then he smiled and returned to playing on his phone.

A short time later, the bus arrived at the school, and everyone disembarked. The group of kids walked across campus, the young man going inside for his class materials and enrollment documents..

In the office, the lady glanced at him before she inquired what he wanted. He informed her he was there to pick up his schedule and file the papers for enrollment. The rude lady walked away after he accepted his schedule and signed the papers. He left and headed for his first class, and spent the day introducing himself to the teachers and students.

After lunch, he headed towards the history class. He saw the writing on the board in Greek, and stood there staring at it, then he spoke out loud.

You will know who you are. If you can read this, you are the son of a God.

Perplexed at the fact he could read it, Jared turned and jumped as the teacher was standing right behind him.

So you can read the words. You are the one I have been waiting for all these years.

The teacher took a step back, then her body twisted and stretched as she showed her true form of a Gorgon. She snatches Jared by the throat; she pulled him forward until her face was close to his and then she extended her jaw with razor-sharp teeth ready to devour him. He struggled against her grip, but couldn't break free.

With a loud bang, the kid from the bus kicked in the door. His eyes turned into a golden light, and a beam of light brightened the room. She dropped Jared. The other boy grabbed him and fled out the door before the Gorgon could recover.

They ran down the hall and out the door towards the football field, where they hid behind the bleachers for the moment. He demanded to know what the hell was that thing, why it tried to kill him, how could he read the words on the board and how he did that with the light. The boy was staring at him, so he looked back and provided him with the answers to his questions.

He informed Jared the creature was a Gorgon; it tried to kill him because someone sent it. He continued on informing him he had the blood of a god in him, which is why he could read it and then let him know he was the son of Helios, the god of the sun. He finished by introducing himself as James Masterson. Jared looked at him and got woozy, lightheaded, and then he fainted. James noticed a gash on his head. He grabbed him and, in a flash of light, vanished.

Jared woke up on the couch feeling confused and groggy. A voice called out, alerting others he was awake. James came to his side and spoke reassuring tone, telling him he would answer his questions and that his brothers would also help. They let him know he wasn't a prisoner and he could leave anytime. The first thing Jared inquired about was who he was and why is he was there now. The second thing, He wanted to know if he was crazy or he was hearing a voice speak to him.

James informed him they couldn't answer his first question because it wasn't their place to do so. The others conveyed to him they would answer the other questions in due time. The brothers left the room and Jared sat there frustrated because he couldn't get any actual answers. James glanced at him. Apologetic, he hinted the fourth room down the hall might hold the answers he was looking for. He whispered to him to wait till his brothers fell asleep. With that, James left and headed to bed.

He waited until nightfall to make his move, slipping out of his room and tiptoeing down the hall. Just as he reached the stairs, Leland appeared, catching him off guard.

Leland inquired what he's doing and Jared revealed he's looking for the bathroom, to which he pointed him toward it.

After thanking him, Jared headed to the bathroom. He stood inside the door, waiting for several minutes to make sure Leland was gone. When he was sure, he crept over to the fourth door and turned the handle, and found it locked. He was confused. Why would James tell him to search that room only to find it locked? Jared placed his hand once more on the door handle and jiggled it. The strange voice whispered again.

    You are not ready.

He ignored the voice, pulled out a lock pick and stuck it into the door and jiggled it around. He jiggled the lock pick until the lock made a sound and then he opened the door. The room was empty except for a podium with a book and an old white crystal box emitting light that he couldn't take his eyes off of. He entered with caution and looked around to find nothing else, so he stepped up to the book and, like the white board, had the weird writing in it. Stood there examining the page, as he placed his hand on the page.

The room suddenly filled with a swirling black smoke, like a shadow swarming him. He ducked down and after several minutes it was gone; he stood up and now saw a black shadow smoke like orb floating above the book.

The voice called out to Jared, warning him that touching the orb would change his world forever. Jared once again ignored the voice, then reached and grabbed the orb. Jared froze when a smokey cloud encircled his body before entering his eyes. When he opened them again, he was standing in a grand hall with people everywhere arguing. Then a guy with gold armor and a lightning bolt on it looked past the guy dressed in black volcanic armor.

What are you doing here boy, you don't belong among us yet?

A bright flash of light caused him to close his eyes again. When he opened them, he was in the same room, except this time it was a small room filled with boxes like a storeroom. Confused, he stumbled out and close the door behind him and headed back to the guest room where he fell on to the bed unconscious.

His mother woke him up the next morning with a knock on the door and asked if he was awake, warning him he would be late for school if he wasn't. She informed him if he wasn't, he would be late for school. Jared lay there for several moments looking up at the ceiling, then got up, got dressed, grabbed his books, and headed out the door before he missed the bus.

A short drive later they arrived at school and Jared went about his day, worried, but he went to his classes and tried to forget the crazy dreams he has been having about strangers and weird places. He walked into history class and saw James sitting there with the rest of the class.

He walked in, sat down and that is when the teacher walked in and her presence startled him. Jared remained quiet as the teacher took the roll sheet and called off names. When she called his name, he raised his hand. After she started her lessons, and that is when things took a turn, she began writing in Greek.

Όλοι όσοι μπορούν να το διαβάσουν αυτό, είστε από το αίμα μας, είστε παιδί των Θεών.

    She then asked the class.

Can anyone tell me what this says? Why was it written in the temple of Zeus? Can you tell me?

She took turns and each student one by one they tried to read it, but couldn't because none of them spoke Greek. She reached for James and motioned for him to read it. Jame focused on the board and after a moment, he informed her he couldn't unless he used a translation app to reveal what it says.

The teacher told him that cheating's not allowed and that the point of the exercise was to help them learn to read and understand their writing and societies..

You, Jared, isn't it? Can you read this or at least try to guess what it says?

    He
