About the Author
DEAD ROSE GARDEN
Jessica Danes showed up at the Rose Garden Hotel in the township of Rosewater two days after her parents perished in an accident with a tipsy motorist.
Jessica is your normal 17-year-old, and she carries the world on her shoulders.
She was a gymnast with black hair and a great physical form, a popular high school boyfriend until that day happened and her parents passed. Jessica’s entire world died that day and for 48 grueling hours, she was struggling to put the pieces together about what happened.
A woman opened the door and Jessica snapped out of her blank stare, noticing a lady in her 70s watching her. The social worker helped and grabbed her stuff from the trunk of the car.
They both ascended the stairs and met the woman at the top, who huffed at them as she introduced herself.
I am Mrs. Winters, the owner and your new Guardian.
It’s nice to meet you.
The civil worker admired the roses close by and spoke to Mrs. Winters as she smelled them.
Those are the gorgeous roses you have here.
Yes, they are, and it rated them the best in the county.
Mrs. Winters led the way in. A young man took her bags. She ordered her to follow him.
Jessica ran after the bellboy. As she climbed the stairs, the young man turned and smiled. She followed him as he continued to ascend the stairs. As they walked down the hall, Jessica noticed a painting on the wall that gave her an eerie feeling. The young man stopped, placed the key in the door, opened it, and entered.
He placed her bag and stuck out his hand, and introduced himself.
Hello, I am Kyle, and if you need anything, please ask.
It is a pleasure to meet you.
Kyle walked out the door. Jessica unpacked and put her clothes on the dresser, and after taking a few minutes to herself, she exited her room.
She wandered down the hall; she turned and examined the painting on the wall, but as she examined it, she noted the couple looked just like her mom and dad. Unable to shake the feeling, she continued on.
Later, she arrived downstairs and entered the dining room. A table’s been prepared and Kyle was waiting. Mrs. Winters came in and sat down as the kitchen staff prepared a stew for the evening meal.
After the meal, Jessica asked to be excused. Without a word, Mrs. Winters nodded with approval.
Jessica headed upstairs to her room to take a shower. She got undressed, turned on the water, feeling like someone was watching her. She stepped out into the rest of the room and didn’t see anyone there. But still had an uneasy feeling. Jessica returned to the bathroom.
After she got into her nightgown and climbed into bed, she fell asleep.
Late into the night, a noise woke her up. She climbed out of bed and crept to the door. She opened it and noticed Kyle dragging a large black bag down the stairs.
Jessica remained quiet as she wandered over to the railing, and as she peered down, she saw him dragging it across the lobby, and towards the kitchen. Jessica got to her feet and moved closer to the stairs. Just as she was about to descend them, a hand touched her shoulder, causing her to jump and scream. As she turned, Mrs. Winters stood before her.
Mrs. Winters stared at her with a scowl and asked.
What are you doing out here, young lady?
Jessica was about to speak when a voice rang out from below.
Is everything okay?
Yes.
Mrs. Winters turned her attention back to Jessica.
I’m sorry. A loud noise woke me up, so I couldn’t sleep. I will return to bed now, ma’am.
Mrs. Winters watched as she reentered her room. Jessica entered and closed the door. She put her ear to it and heard chatter fading in the distance as the voice of Mrs. Winters traveled back down the hall. Jessica climbed back into bed and fell asleep for the rest of the night.
The next morning, Jessica got up and got dressed, and headed downstairs for breakfast. As she passed the lobby, she noticed luggage sitting there, but no one was around. She proceeded on to the dining area and sat down. Then, moments afterward, a member of the kitchen crew brought out breakfast.
Jessica thanked the staff member, who strode away and returned to the kitchen.
After brunch, Jessica wandered around the grounds and checked out the place she would call home. She got up and sauntered through the rear doors to the back of the grounds. She walked around, and she came to the famous rose garden. As she opened the gate and wandered in. A voice yelled out.
Hey, don’t go in there. Mrs. Winters will get very upset.
Jessica turned, and a handsome tanned young man is walking towards her. She introduced herself.
Hi, I am Jessica.
I am Omar.
Omar ushered her from the garden and locked the fence up. Confusion fell over Jessica about why she couldn’t just go into the garden to look around. Omar spent the rest of the time escorting her around to monitor her, so that she didn’t go in the garden, the storehouse or the basement, which were all off limits.
During the rest of the time, Omar and Jessica enjoyed each other’s company and conversations. She explored where she could go, and he remained by her side for the duration. The day wore on and it was about time for Omar to head home for the evening. They walked over to his truck, flirting with one another.
I had a wonderful day hanging out with you.
So did I. Maybe we can do it again sometime?
I would like that sometime. See you around.
She gave him a flirty smile.
Omar smiled back as she walked away from the truck and she sauntered away, heading back inside as darkness fell.
Jessica headed upstairs to wash up for supper, and a short time later, headed into the dining room for dinner. As she approached the table, Mrs. Winters and Kyle were already receiving their food. Jessica sat down. Mrs. Winters’ voice spoke up, filling the room.
You tried to enter the garden today, well I will let you know now that no one enters the garden except me.
I am sorry, I didn’t know, and Omar advised me after.
Well, that is no excuse, and I hope he told you the basement and storehouse are off limits as well. If I find you have been in any of those places, I will castigate you. Now get out of my sight, child.
They forced Jessica to eat in another room.
Afterward, Jessica headed to her room to shower before bed. She finished up, got dressed, climbed into bed, and fell asleep. Around 2:00 am she heard a loud thump, except this time in the room next to her, and opened her door a crack.
No one was around and so she stepped out and knocked on the door, and got no answer. She figured she was just hearing things and headed back to bed.
The next morning as she was coming out of her room, she ran into Kyle, who was bringing luggage out of the room next to hers. He shut the door as she bumped into him, and he was apologetic. Jessica started asking what he was up to.
What are you doing?
I am removing luggage from the room and putting it in the lobby for holding. The couple who were in the room broke a few things, so they have to pay or we take their stuff as payment till they reimbursed the hotel for damages.
Oh, okay, well, let me help.
Jessica help pick up a couple of bags and they walked down the stairs together.
He showed her where the bags get placed and all the while they were enjoying themselves.
During breakfast, Mrs. Winters came into the dining room. She stood there, staring over at Kyle and Jessica, who were laughing and having a great time getting to know each other.
Kyle would show her how to work at the hotel, she said as she walked up. She expected her to be up by 7:00 am every morning. Ready to work as a housekeeper.
She did her duties of clearing out the rooms, cleaning them up, and put on fresh linens and placing luggage for collateral. She finished up and then trudged away.
After breakfast, Jessica followed Kyle to the closet where they kept the cart, and he showed her how to put it together with supplies for the room. He showed her to knock and announce herself, then enter the room, write the damage, and how to put fresh blankets and sheets. Empty the garbage, and pick up the questionable items some people leave behind.
Afterward, he showed her the laundry room and taught her how to wash and dry the bedding.
Jessica, now alone, used her key to unlock the door to the room next to her. She put on her rubber gloves and noticed a used condom on the night table and blurted.
Ew, that is gross.
She picked it up and threw it in the garbage can, then she picked it up and dumped it in the main garbage bag attached to the cart. She reentered the room and cleared the blankets and found a small bloodstain on the sheet.
Great, that is disgusting. It is called a pad or tampon.
She stripped the bed and put fresh clean linens. After she finished, she moved on to cleaning the rest of the room, and next to the dresser near the bathroom door, she kneeled down and discovered a tooth.
She entered the bathroom and noticed several drops of blood. She dropped the tooth in the sink and rushed out of the room, and ran into Mrs. Winters, who became aggressive in her response.
Why are you rushing? And why are you not done yet in that room?
I am sorry, ma’am, I found a tooth, and some blood in the sink, and a bloodstain on the sheet.
Well, let’s look then.
They entered the room and then she walked over to the sink, and saw the blood drops, and the tooth, so she stepped back out of the room.
She advised her the couple who rented this room got into an argument. And that one of them must have lost a tooth after being hit and that is how the blood got on the bed and sink. As well as the tooth on the floor.
Jessica stared at her in shock at how calm she was. Then Mrs. Winters walked away. The rest of the afternoon Jessica finished the room and moved onto the next.
The rest of the week, it was the same. She would get up, eat, and then she would work at cleaning the rooms of the hotel. She and Omar would get a few minutes to hangout, and sometimes sneak into a room to make out.
It appears Jessica has found a guy who has gained her affection. This went on for several weeks, and as time passed, she settled into her roles as a housecleaner and secret make out partner.
Jessica, however, noticed that odd noises and behaviors happened only at night and she noticed that some of the staff were acting strange as well.
Jessica knew if she wanted to know about theses strange occurrences, she would have to break the rules in order to discover the secrets behind the Rose Garden Hotel.
The following day, she continued to do her duties to avoid the wrath of Mrs. Winters. She ordered Jessica to take out the trash. Jessica left the cart and headed downstairs to the kitchen, where she grabbed the garbage bags and headed out back to the bins.
After a short walk, she opened the lid and screamed, dropping the bags, and running away.
Back at the hotel, she burst through the door and ran into Kyle, who was mopping the kitchen floor. Stammering, she struggled to tell him.
Kyle, I… I… I.
Wow, slow down. What are you talking about?
Breathing, she caught her breath and responded to his question.
I found a head in the bin. Come quick, now.
Kyle and Jessica exited the hotel, and Kyle followed her back to the garbage
