    DEDICATION

This short story was something I started about eight years ago just after my mother was diagnosed with cancer. My mother raised my siblings and me pretty much by herself. At the time she was diagnosed, I was in college and living nearly 500 miles away. I had no idea what I’d do without my mother. And being so far away didn’t help eliminate that fear, it only made it stronger. In order to deal with those emotions, I began this story.

She has now been in remission for nearly six years. And it was only within the last year that I was able to finish it and truly give it justice. Don’t you think she’s gonna be pissed when she finds out? Her brother placed a stack of their mother’s books in a box.

Jessica glanced around their mother’s bedroom. She and Jake had spent the better part of the morning packing up the house. They had to decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to throw away before repairs could even begin. There was still so much to do before the funeral and wake the next day. Marie will understand that the house has to be sold. She knows what kind of debt Mom had to be covered.

Taking a couple of steps back, Jake scooped up a handful of books from the top shelf of the six-foot-tall bookcase. I still think you should’ve talked to her first.

I tried, but you saw how inconsolable she was when I told her about mom’s passing. She was so upset that she hadn’t been here. There was no talking to her after that. Her eyes roamed the room and paused on the bed. Their mother had gone in her sleep in the comfort of her own home. One of the few things Jessica was grateful for, even if she wished they’d all had time to say goodbye. It was better that their mother died at home than in a hospital bed hooked up to machines. Jessica wiped at the tears that prickled the corners of her eyes.

"We could’ve waited, at least until after the service. Then you could’ve
