A Light Amongst the Stars - Dr. Mark W. Burns
An Unusual Journey
Amelia had rarely felt comfortable talking about herself. She had always felt that she was different. From the age of six she had seen things that others could not, so visions were not new to her. It was even more frightening when what she saw in her visions appeared soon after, and she often felt guilty, thinking that perhaps she had caused the event. In the past few weeks her visions were becoming more intense and graphic than usual, and she wanted to better understand where they were coming from and what they meant. Recently she had been getting the same vision most nights. It was starting to affect her sleep, to the point where she was fearful of closing her eyes and seeing it again.
This was becoming unsettling, as the feelings around the visions had become stronger and clearer. Like most teenage girls, she wanted very much to be like her friends and siblings and to feel normal—whatever that felt like. She was different and she knew it, despite her best efforts to conform to the thinking and behaviour of others. Even her parents and siblings felt like strangers at times, seeming to fit easily into their suburban lifestyle without being challenged by the deep knowing and visions that Amelia was beginning to experience constantly.
There was only one person she felt she could talk to without fear of ridicule. She enjoyed going to her grandmother’s house, having a cup of tea, and getting her tea leaves read. Gran—as she called her—was the only person who she felt really understood her. Gran never judged her or looked away, confused or embarrassed, when Amelia talked about her visions. She seemed to like Amelia’s company as much as Amelia liked hers.
Gran was known within the family for having the Gift,
and would often read tea leaves for other members of the family. Everyone considered her to be a little crazy, but in a quaint enough way to allay any real concern for her mental well-being. And reading tea leaves was a good party trick when you had friends over, so her quirkiness never seemed strange or scary.
So, what do you think it means?
asked Amelia when she visited Gran on the Saturday afternoon before Christmas. Amelia had been getting this same vision over and over for the last two weeks, and she was starting to genuinely fear that she was going crazy.
Tell me again how you felt when the latest vision came to you,
asked Gran.
I felt sad, and there was a deep pain in my chest. I heard beautiful music that sounded like angels singing.
Were you afraid?
Not really,
said Amelia. But I could see Uncle Peter in hospital, and I knew his wife and family were around him, crying about what was happening.
Your uncle Peter is going to die soon,
said Gran, and you have a special gift that can see into the future and help him pass over.
But Uncle Peter is not sick or in hospital.
Wait,
said Gran.
Five days later Uncle Peter had a major heart attack. He was rushed to hospital where he had a second attack that took his life while his family were gathered around his bed. Amelia was wracked with guilt and felt that she was somehow responsible for her uncle dying. Rubbish,
said Gran when next she saw her. You only saw ahead of time what was about to happen. You have a gift like me. It transcends time, and you will use it to help many people once you learn to understand and master it. You have a strong destiny and you will experience many wondrous things in your life, but you must learn how to control your gift so that it is a blessing on others and not a burden on yourself.
Little did Amelia know at that early stage of her life how true Gran’s words were.
Seeing Dead People
It wasn’t just visions heralding some event or outcome that Amelia experienced. Often, she would wake in the night and see someone standing by her bed. This was a frequent occurrence, and the Spirit involved always had a message for her. Sometimes it was about something that would soon happen, or a message of comfort and love from across the veil, as Amelia liked to think of it. These messages were being given from someone who had passed over to a living person she was soon to meet.
In addition to the guidance these messages brought, there was always a higher purpose behind them and Amelia quickly understood that there were other dimensions, which we all experience when our bodies die. Amelia realized that our physical reality is only a small part of who we are, that we are all much greater than our physical beings. This brought great comfort to her. She came to know that the glue that binds all these dimensions together is love. It also became apparent to Amelia that we have many lives, and we slip in and out of different bodies to learn about love and compassion. This also allows some people
