About this ebook
A Guide to Creating the Best Data Communications and Networks for Your Business
No business can function without the effective design and implementation of data communications and computer networks. Yet these IT functions remain poorly understood and difficult to build strategy upon. However, every CEO needs to ensure that their organization has a powerful data communications strategy to succeed, as innovative landscapes continue to shift, challenging their operations at every turn. And one way to stay above the chaos and still operate efficiently is by having the right computer network to back it all up, safely and securely.
But most CEOs do not have time to become computer network experts, although it is crucial that they understand the constantly evolving technical dangers that can disrupt and destroy their business model. Even for leaders without a strong technical background, Nathan offers the tools for CEOs to be able to analyze what they need to implement in their organization’s overall digital strategy.
In The CEO’s Digital Survival Guide: A Practical Handbook to Navigating the Future, Nathan Whittacre gives access to the fundamentals of basic operations, features, and the limitations of different computer networks available today. Nathan has years of experience creating systems and processes to help CEOs run their businesses. He gives an easy-to-follow overview of what every CEO needs to know in order to be able to systematically understand, analyze and implement the right system for their organization to protect their infrastructure against external and internal threats. He explains best practices and discusses the most current technologies that are available.

The CEO's Digital Survival Guide - Nathan Whittacre
CHAPTER 1
A DIGITAL SELF-ASSESSMENT
c03Ioften say that I didn’t learn how to run a business in school. The designers of the computer science curriculum at my university must have forgotten to include a business management, accounting, finance, human resources, or any type of running a business
survival class in between my programming, engineering, math, and science classes. To be able to run and grow a business over the past twenty-eight years, I’ve relied on three sources of knowledge and wisdom: trial and error (much more on the error side), consultants and other professionals, and books. I’ve listened to hundreds of great speakers over my time in business and read countless books about all aspects of running a business. One thing that always has helped me improve my business is doing a self-assessment about the topic—usually failing the assessment—and then using the knowledge from the book or speaker to improve a few aspects of how I operate my business.
With my experience in mind, I am going to start by giving you an assessment. This is not a test. There is no pass-fail for this assessment. Well, technically, there is a failure option because if you either don’t have most of these things in place in your business or don’t understand what they are, then your employees, the hackers, and your competition will test your business technology, and they will make sure your business fails. No pressure now—this is to see where you are at in your business and for you to find out what you do know and don’t know about the terms and technology that we are going to be discussing in this book.
This assessment has a score between 30 and 90. You will rank each question between 1 and 3.
1—You don’t understand the question, or you have not implemented it in any way in your company.
2—You have a general understanding of the question and have attempted to implement it in your company, but you know it is not working 100 percent for you.
3—You understand the information in the question, and you know that it is fully implemented across your organization.
Be honest with yourself. This is just the beginning of your journey. By the end of the book, you will understand these concepts and know who needs to implement them inside your company. For now, just get a score for yourself. This is the starting point. The assessment is divided up into six sections: infrastructure, cybersecurity, compliance, backup and disaster recovery, business strategy, and cloud. Each subsection has a possible score of 15.
A00If you don’t want to write in the book and make this a permanent record, you can download this as a PDF from my website: https://nathanwhittacre.com/resources. Feel free to download it as many times as you want and also have your team take it. It is always interesting to see where your assessment compares against others on your management team.
img015img016img017img018img019img020Aren’t you glad that is done? Don’t worry, it is nearly impossible for an organization to have a perfect score. If you have 75 or above, you are doing good, and this book will help you improve on the foundation of technology that you have built. If your score is between 50 and 75, you are well on your way to understanding what you need to do but most likely need to build the infrastructure inside your organization to implement these pieces of your technology. If you are below 50, I’d suggest focusing on a particular area that you think you can get some quick progress on and start working on it.
At the end of each section of the book, you’ll have an opportunity to take another self-assessment on what you’ve learned from that part of the book. This is a guide and a workbook. My goal is to help you effectuate change inside your business so that you are ready for the
