Melanie Johnson was born and raised in Utah.One of her earliest memories is learning how to paint a dinosaur in kindergarten. "I remember feeling very proud when I was finished. From then on, I have dreamt of making art professionally. I would show my mom all the little drawings I made with enthusiasm. She would tell me that she loved how expressive and creative they were. This book is dedicated to my two sons, Nathan and Justice.  Nothing in my life comes close to being as valuable as the gift of being their mother.  These two amazing young men teach me so much, show me enormous love and keep me young every single day.  My hope is to leave a legacy for them to enjoy a relationship with God, love, respect, kindness, wisdom and the legacy to be the best father ever to their own children.

Opportunity often comes by surprise.  Many times the very best opportunities show up, seemingly, through no effort of our own.  It’s when God, the Universe, and His Destiny take over.

It’s how this book came about.

Simply meeting Jenn Foster was a matter of fate.  Following the initial meeting, we started a new publishing company and started to market ourselves.  I updated my profile with the new business on LinkedIn and got a message from Susan Casias.  Although we had never met, she reached out to me and asked to meet over lunch.

Susan Casias is a very interesting woman.  During our lunch, she told me of her amazing background and how she overcame life choices and dramatic obstacles.  I shared my own life challenges and we immediately hit it off.  Visit her website to learn more about her business. Susan told me of an employee of hers from years earlier in her career.  Joshua Evans was an enthusiastic spitfire of a salesperson.  When Josh changed jobs he kept in touch with Susan because of his utmost respect for her.

She was convinced Josh needed a book to help propel him to a higher level and boost his career path.  Susan set up a lunch for the three of us.  On the spot...without any hesitation...Josh committed to work with us to get his book published in August 2015.  Elite Online Publishing launched his book in November 2015.  Just three months after his decision Josh’s book became a #1 Best Seller. 

Josh’s Continued Success

With the success of the book, Josh was able to leave his day job and start his own successful consulting business.  Within six months Josh was awarded the TEDx Talk Franchise for Sugarland, Texas.  He invited me to breakfast to share the good news and invited me to be a speaker for the next event.

Typically, people have whole campaigns designed for the sole purpose of becoming a TED speaker.  It can take years and often does not happen at all.  Prospective speakers put a lot of work and effort in the quest to be given such an opportunity. 

I had never even had the idea of being a TEDx speaker on my radar or big giant goals list.  Apparently God did have it on His list for me.  Once we narrowed down my topic, it was clear leaving a legacy was the most powerful message I could deliver. Jenn and I found many authors are inspired to leave a legacy with a book.  There was such a powerful need, we had already created a series of books called Story Starters with How to Write Your Life Story and Leave a Legacy as our Elite Story Starter 2. (http://amzn.to/1TA7ypa)

Even before I gave the TED talk, Jenn and I decided there should be a book to go with the talk.  After all, we are publishers and we already have the talk.  How hard can it be?

I have to admit, I got caught up in the typical writer procrastination.

Time Keeps On Slipping

When time and days are going by but the deadline you have chosen still seems like its months away...then one day reality hits you.  Suddenly you have less than 30 days to finish. 

With the authors I coach, we set deadlines together - with a timeline and benchmarks.  But, for some reason I didn’t use this best practice myself.  I guess I thought the process only applied for my coveted author family to make sure they didn’t stress out and things run smoothly.  My actions followed the age-old adage about the shoemaker’s son not having good shoes.

This introduction is the last thing on my list of writing tasks.  As I write these last sentences I’m feeling a sense of relief.

HEADS UP!

This book is for implementers.  You’ll find a lot of ideas on how you can leave your legacy.  The methods will work on any type of wisdom you decide to share. 

Use the book as a conversation starter with family, friends, coworkers, and people you meet on the street.  It will give you a chance for them to get to know you better, develop a bond and also learn more about them too.
